I think Martinez deserves a lot of credit for his tactics today as well. Under Moyes in the same situation I think you'd have defended deep and absorbed the pressure, and we'd have probably broken through. Martinez deployed Mirallas with instructions to pin people back and try to break whenever possible, and it was a huge pressure relief on your team because it kept disrupting our momentum.

This is what Drogba did for us in our numerous meetings with Barcelona in the CL, relieved that pressure. If you let them pin you in the box they'll eventually break through on the law of averages if anything. This is why Barca found it so hard to break us down, while they tore United to pieces. United didn't (or couldn't) try to disrupt the momentum. This was your undoing against us in the FA cup a few years back as well, there just wasn't any relief.

I thought it was a very sophisticated approach and really showed his worth as a manager. It probably meant the difference between a win and a draw today.

THIS, THIS and THIS...you are a gentleman Sir...

100% agree, and a credit to you in remaining involved on the thread, and remaining objective about the performances after the result.

Anyone who cared to listen to me previously would have seen me say that I was quite pleased with the start to the season and that, sooner or later, we would probably bag a win when we didn't deserve it as opposed to the first three games when we certainly deserved at least 2 wins. Today Everton defended resolutely - and whilst Chelsea will feel aggrieved at the result after spurning several good openings it is only right to point out that Howard was only called upon to make one decent save.
Barry looks an excellent acquisition - always in the right place - but to be fair, all the team played well.
For Chelsea - Mata apart - there were some undistinguished performances - Terry slower than a truck and miles apart from David Luiz in the centre of the back line, E'too I can only assume was kept on as punishment for his utter wastefulness, Ramires as bad as ever...
Oh and Mr Hazard - you miserable, surly so-and-so (as I can attest from having met him) - unlucky son.

Agree their the deluded one dropped a bollock taking mata off, and letting us play against 10 men (torres dosnt count)

Thought we were awful for 15 minutes either side half time. Superb for the last half hour, Mirallas showing Jelavic how it's done. Barry was brilliant but so were the back four.

You just know he's taken endless grief from mates off this...

Boss result that, brilliant win. Brilliant atmosphere downstairs in the Gwladys at half time and full time as well.

ALLEZ ALLEZ ALLEZ OHHH!

Just arrived home *hic*

Played blues, that's what we like. Rode our luck with a few chances (Eto'o probably should have had two down my end and Schurrle should have slotted, but it's about time we had some luck this season imo.

Gareth Barry. Excellent performance. Wreaked of Carsley in his pomp with more than a little bit of quality too. He'll be loved in the Gwladys Street this year, especially by the arl fellas who love a good strong, calm consistent "keep it simple" player in front of that back four. He's going to be very popular.

No one else was really great I thought. It wasn't a good footballing performance at all, but we were without Gibbo and Pienaar and we still have McCarthy to come in and Lukaku to come in who won't fall over every time the ball comes within 10 yards of him, which is promising.

It is a shame how much Baines seems to miss Pienaar though. The South African is getting on now and if we want to bench him in future we need to find a way of playing that allows Baines to be effective. I don't think him and Mirallas works tbh. At least not yet.

Buzzing to have 3 points now. That's a monkey off our backs. Also, this makes up for a couple of points that we dropped in the first three games as it's a game no one seemingly outside Evertonians expected us to win. What we need to do now is get consistent and not let this be a stop-start opening to the season. Let's beat West Ham and get into the 4th round of the CoC and it'll have been a strong start to the season.

Good summary above from paulbefc. Regarding Baines, I actually think he played well. It was a defensive-minded performance more than what we're used to but he did what he was meant to do well.

Great to get the 3 points. What a debut from Barry, well played. Naismith wasn't bad, but he did give the ball away quite a bit. Agree with Mirallas up front, he looked good there and gave us an option when we got the ball back. Thought Barkley wasn't as good as he has been, but given he hasn't had much experience in games like this, is understandable, still did a decent job though. The defence looked good and it's good to see that we've kept our third clean sheet today, something that a lot of us were worried about with Martinez.

It was good to see that after the pressure we were under for the 15-20 minutes in the second half that we were able to get forward and try and get a second. Last season, we probably would've tried to soak up the pressure and would've eventually conceded the inevitable goal and maybe another to go with it.
