I'll just go through what I thought of those in the starting XI today.
Olsen I don't think can be blamed for the goals and didn't really need to do much apart from pick the ball out of the net. No reason to drop him still, but he's not the long-term answer for me. We're in a right mess because we'll never find a buyer for Pickford.
Coleman we can see why he didn't start v Spurs, because he's finished. Not his fault that his body just can't do it any more, but he's so far off what's needed now it isn't funny. Yes he came on in the week and looked fresh, but from the start and expecting him to do something positive it's a lost cause nowadays.
Holgate was hopeless in everything he did. His passing from the back was simple; he didn't dare to try anything other than a lay off to Godfrey or Gomes. When shifted to right back, what's the point? It's a waste of time him even going up the wing because even if he gets the ball in space the attack dies with him. He cannot cross, and his automatic first thought is to pass backwards. After tonight, even if it's not his preferred position, it has to be Godfrey. It's a shame we've continued to neglect the right hand side of the field.
Godfrey didn't do anything especially bad, but I can't really slate him for much apart from switching off on the second goal which allowed two of their players (Holgate also responsible) the opportunity to knock it in. This mistake will have to be part of the learning curve for him.
Digne I thought was very bad. In the first half I lost count of the amount of times Fulham were able to find a man when one on one with him on the wing - they bypassed him every time. Maybe he needs somebody working harder on the left wing to support him? Was Richarlison on the left tonight? Genuinely can't remember because he was anonymous.
Gomes also horrible, slow and only attempted anything other than a square or back pass about three times, twice which led to a positive move which, ultimately, came to nothing in attack. If you try something and it turns into a good attack, why not do more of it? He just reverts to type so often. If you can't influence a home game vs Fulham in midfield you have big problems.
Doucoure, like Godfrey, I didn't recognise as having a particularly bad game, but he didn't influence anything. I can forgive him more as he played 2 hours vs Spurs in that vital central midfield position, and it can't be helpful having Gomes alongside him the way he performed tonight.
Davies did ok - wasn't worse than Gomes in any case - but got hooked anyway. Didn't really do anything good or terrible. He's played a lot recently and, like Doucoure, maybe I can be more accepting of his performance. That said, he's a young lad supposedly in the best shape he'll ever be in his life...
James was woeful and didn't look up for the fight, underlined by him, imo, wimping out and wanting to come off. I have sympathy with him because he's being asked to play alongside a bunch of amateurs and how is he supposed to play his intricate passing game with the likes of Coleman, Holgate, Sigurdsson and Gomes those nearest to him who kill anything positive we're working towards? He must know deep down that unless it's him doing it, any hard work or piece of skill he does will be let down by whichever team mate he plays the ball to.
Sigurdsson was great vs Spurs, abysmal here. I don't care if you're tired, the way he was brushed off the ball like a child for the second goal was embarrassing, and he couldn't even be arsed making an effort to win the ball back. We've seen this far too much from him over the past 18 months. Like Richarlison, just because he had a good game vs Spurs doesn't mean all is forgotten.
Richarlison as we know touched the ball about five times. If DCL is the number 9 he's at least hustling and busting a gut to close down, drop deeper and add an extra man when we're under pressure and winning headers. Richarlison did absolutely none of that tonight, he was as bad as any of the rubbish performances we've got used to seeing from him this season.
Learnings:
- If we have Digne, plus two of Holgate, Mina and Keane fit, then Godfrey has to play right back.
- Holgate should not be starting games for us at the moment.
- James is wasted until we make another 3/4/5 top signings.
- Richarlison is *not* back. He was rubbish before the Spurs game all season and he was rubbish tonight, Needs to show improvements fast.
- As we've known for years, we're so depressingly slow in possession.
- Teams know they can outfight us without even putting in much effort.
That was a very bad evening for the club. Carlo will be livid I would imagine.
