A great win today, not always at our best, but a clean sheet and a convincing win in the end. What is most pleasing to me, is how many goals we are getting late in games now and as a result how many points we are winning in the last 5-/10/20 minutes of games.

I think this is one subtle change of Koeman and getting us fitter. While the football has not improved dramatically our ability to keep going for 90 has improved and will stand us in good stead. The manager appears to be using his squad and substitutes a bit better now as well. I hope Calvert Lewin's injury isn't too serious, as we are developing a number of players who now contribute from the bench. Him, Valencia, Davies all seem good bench options, when you look at them and think "they could change the game for us".

I only saw the second half which has probably messed my view of the whole game up a bit but we looked pretty good after Valencia came on.

Mixing short and long hoofs. I liked it.

And piped down the utter utter beauts that I'm living and working with daily. Cannot wait.

Koeman's quick quotes

The result is very good. A clean sheet today, we needed a lot of intensity. That was better in the second half than the first - maybe we didn't have that tempo at the start.

We had a good organisation and we know we can score when we create chances. In the final 20 minutes we were really good.

At half-time I mentioned to play at a higher tempo but it is difficult, Southampton are a strong team. But we made the difference in the final part of the game, because we missed the intensity in the first half.

ON VALENCIA / CALVERT-LWEIN

Really good performances from him, and that type of competition is good to have.

He was really important. That was also the reason to start with Dominic [Calvert-Lewin], to put somebody with pace behind Romelu and more freedom for Ross [Barkley] on the side.

We start well, because Dominic started well and we missed that after 15 minutes, but of course that was a decision that I took and after 60 minutes the team needed that type of player to bring in.

It's really disappointing for him and everybody. But okay, he's still young and he's strong and will come back - he's a big talent.

ON DAVIES

Good, strong in the midfield. Comfortable on the ball, maybe one or two mistakes but he showed his development today. And we need the boy because Idrissa Gueye is going to the Africa Cup of Nations, and James McCarthy is still not fit.

Don't care how we won, just that we won..and comfortably in the end. Perfect start to the new year, some new faces, perhaps a little announcement regarding a dock, renewed confidence and things could be looking up.

I'd go along with that.

Wouldn't say the 1st half was poor, just needed adjustment and we had a couple of mistakes. I do like that we wanted another striker off Rom. Also that hes looking to try and give Ross more room (it worked).

2nd half different ball game.

Hadn't spotted the stat about us being the PL's best team in terms of gaining points from losing positions (think it was highlighted in the Hull commentary). It does suggest we're getting fitter, and more recently, that the effort is there.
