Agreed. And that's because we didn't play our best team.
Our best team fail to do the basics as well
In the instance they scored the goal, we had:
- Our first choice CM (at the moment) - Davies, not doing his job
- Our first choice FB (at the moment) - Kenny, not doing his job
- Our first choice CB pairing (at the moment), not doing their jobs
Schneiderlin was the only 'new player' in the line up in that instance who was also responsible for them scoring.
Now, I get the point about too many changes. I agree, Gana, Gylfi, Pickford could all have played.
But Tosun is our first choice striker anyway, so what was wrong with him coming in. Everyone - and I mean everyone - was calling for Bernard to start. Lookman needed the minutes and was our best player in the first half by most accounts.
So where was the harm in that?
We have tried to build a deep squad but if the players aren't playing then we might as well just have 11 and be done with it. This was a good chance to get those players minutes and unfortunately they didn't produce the goods. It's not about disrespecting any competition. Not every change is detrimental.
It just shows what a lot of work we still have to do and also goes to show why suggestions like 'play Bernard through the middle instead of Gylfi' are utter tripe at this stage as well.
