...very disappointing. I’m more concerned with how easily teams are getting at us than the amount of changes we made. For a long period of the 2nd half it looked only a matter of time before Southampton scored again.

Looked like Ings drew Keane out for their goal and he then ran blindly back into the box without tracking the run of the striker. Schneiderlin was facing play but didn’t sniff the danger out. Basic stuff and individual errors compound the lack of defensive organisation.

Dreadful penalty by Richarlison, it was as though he’d never hit a dead ball in his life.

Went for Bernard who confirmed what a good footballer he is and we all like watching good footballers.

It was a must win game last night. Having the cup game ahead once we turn our form about was key and now we have lost that chance.

I do fear complacency will creep in if we don't start putting wins together until our best 11 are available. I don't expect to win every week but win Saturday and maybe we start getting some optimism into the team.

God knows us fans could do with some too.

As stated twice we should have gone all out to win this cup. Silva now puts himself under early pressure to the fans with this defeat. So what do we have to look forward to. Nothing. Managers are obsessed with the premier league. I couldn’t care less whether we finish 5th or 15th if it means a trip to Wembley and a trophy. Sick of being the laughing stock of the league. Too many players out there not good enough. That was a Southampton reserve team and they should have wrapped game up a lot earlier
Mark Hughes by the way is a horrible man

We could and should have had Leicester for a place in the cup quarter finals.
Watch us get Liverpool away in the cup

Jesus christ, we lost a cup game on pennos.

People totally ignoring how well we played second half on Saturday and, if were more clinical would have beaten Arsenal the week before.

We STILL have not played near enough our best squad with 2 Barca players to come in as well as more of Bernard,Digne and Ricco. People saying stuff like, we have nothing to look forward to or, they are done with Everton on the back of this result, get a grip man.

@ToffeeTim @GrandOldTeam

Sorry for being blunt last night lads, was having to be short as I was working.

I agree with you that there were too many changes. But, I don't think the changes weakened us significantly enough, on paper, to warrant us not winning that game.

Maybe it's a mentality thing or maybe it's just that we got the basics wrong - again - I don't know.

I don't think Silva 'threw the game', and that's the shouts I don't agree with.

I think he - quite rightly in my opinion - trusted our players to win that game. I think he probably didn't help with two more changes than the five (at a push) that were understandable.

5/6 (due to Davies early introduction) started in the winning league game vs them, the two wingers who scored in that game also came on last night and both missed their penalties.

I understand knocking the manager for hours selections but the team was much better than a weak Southampton and should have got the game won. I think games likes these you have to use your squad otherwise how will you really know what's the best subs to make / replacement for injuries. You can't base everything on training.

If you're going to go out of a tournament then going early is probably best because there's less to distract further down the line.

Disappointed but there are still some positives. Bernard looks great.

Yes the team should have won. But that's not my point. That selection gave us far less chance of winning than if we'd played full strength. Saints saw our team and would have been filled with confidence.

Of course it's no guarantee our first 11 wins, but they have a heck of a lot better a chance than kids and fringe players with a diabolical goalkeeper as last line of defence. Silva took an unnecessary risk and it cost us dear. But the fact he was willing to take such a huge risk, with SEVEN changes shows he holds the supporters and the competition in contempt.

Last night, while disappointing, was an opportunity to rotate the squad and allow other players the chance to come in and show for a place in the starting IX, none of them took it. Had Lookman and Dowell not been picked last night, there would have been plenty asking why not.

We started with JJK, Davies, Lookman and Dowell and all were, according to reports, outshone by Matt Target, who at 23 and following a few loan spells is starting to look the part. There is no doubt that the majority of our younger players need farmed out on loan, they simply aren’t good enough to start for us in any competition. We need to do what Chelsea do and sell when we get the chance and effectively use them as an additional revenue stream and I think, eventually, we will. Speaking of which, someone like Ruben Loftus Cheek has to be on the list for Christmas

As it stands, we are still missing Mina, Coleman and Gomes and Bernard is not yet match fit, we also need a striker. I think our best performances this season have been away from home (granted we haven’t won any of those games!) and we need a front man. This is not an 8 game one transfer window fix.

Our midfield is terrible.

The squad players have to be tested and we need to see what we need to keep and what to get rid of. If anything, last night probably provided a few answers for the management team.

Very disappointing and not acceptable to go out, especially to Southampton at home but it’s going to take more than 8 games for any manager to turn this ship around.

This is where I think you're going overboard mate.

He'll be disappointed we didn't win. He simply overestimated our squad. That doesn't mean he holds contempt for anything.
