5/6 (due to Davies early introduction) started in the winning league game vs them, the two wingers who scored in that game also came on last night and both missed their penalties.

I understand knocking the manager for hours selections but the team was much better than a weak Southampton and should have got the game won. I think games likes these you have to use your squad otherwise how will you really know what's the best subs to make / replacement for injuries. You can't base everything on training.

Exactly mate.

People have been crying out for three of those changes that were made last night.

I think Baines coming in was always likely, and he clearly had faith in Dowell - who did what Dowell does which is float through a game. It's why I'm not sure he'll cut it, because he doesn't do enough, it's all about moments with him, but you don't know unless you try.

I don't see the point in Stek and, really, Gana could have played. But, imagine if he had and he'd have done his hamstring. I'm sure Silva would be getting pelters then as well.

The season is going the way many thought it would around July and August tbf.
The expectation that exploded after the first win was mind boggling.
We (Marco) has a massive job on his hands as much on the deadwood we mostly agreed on in the summer... is still here.

There are better strikers sitting on the bench of the Sky 6, all of whom are better than anything at Everton.
Are we doing this football thing right?

If we can not buy/attract the really top players then we need to continue with getting quality loans.
Our first 11 is not good enough, let alone the rest of the squad.

We desperately need to find a long term solution to replacing Lukaku.
We desperately need to find a long term solution for the DM position. Never replaced Gaz Baz properly.

Be nice when Mina gets playing and we still need the next 60 grand Seamus Coleman.

Even had we beat Southampton, I'm not sure we are good enough to beat Leicester.
That is where we are these days.

There are going to be more days ahead like this lads.
We are a work in progress.

But Bernard needed a start. So did Lookman. The wingers should be relatively interchangeable.

Tosun over DCL - are you really arguing with that considering DCL was poor against Fulham and Tosun came on and played well?
I don't rate Tosun, but he wasn't one of the three players who should have played but weren't on your list. Those three were Walcott, Richarlison and Sigurdsson.
But like Silva, you think we should play weakened teams in the league cup. That's why we have never got near winning it since 1984.

I don't think we should play 'weakened' teams. I think that our squad players need to be good enough to slot in and perform.

Bernard and Lookman needed minutes. What's the point in having them if not?

Tosun is our first choice striker. Doesn't matter if you rate him or not. Silva would have got pelters from a lot on here had he started DCL. Baines and Schneiderlin should be good enough to fill in when needed.

The two weird changes were Dowell and Stek, for me.

So get off your high horse. I was three months old when Everton last won a trophy. I want to see it as much as anyone. But that team that started last night should have had enough to beat a second string Southampton side.

What exactly did he say Dave
He said that he didn't know what the team were trying to achieve out there (on the pitch in the first 45 minutes).

Billy Big Bollocks in the studio doing something you wouldn't even expect a snide like Osman to do.

Tosun over DCL...

I would ask the question : If you were a defender who would you rather play against ?

Tosun static forward with nice touches & goal ratio of 1-10 games reached his peak of ability...
DCL Rapid young forward who is very strong in the air & scores 1-6 games improving all the time...

DCL all day long...

Woah, wait, is that the reason you hate him? all those years of toil and you hate him cos he said " he didn't know what the team were trying to achieve out there "?

Yet when DCL has started the last few games there's been plenty on here slating him and the manager...

The bloke can't win either way!

Also, I am a fan of DCL but he was pretty atrocious on Saturday and Tosun played well when he came on. On merit, Tosun probably deserved to start.

Away at Leicester in a few days, though, I'd definitely be looking to start DCL again. Or, Richarlison down the middle if Silva thinks he's up to it, with Bernard down the left.

Jesus christ, we lost a cup game on pennos.

People totally ignoring how well we played second half on Saturday and, if were more clinical would have beaten Arsenal the week before.

We STILL have not played near enough our best squad with 2 Barca players to come in as well as more of Bernard,Digne and Ricco. People saying stuff like, we have nothing to look forward to or, they are done with Everton on the back of this result, get a grip man.

So why on earth not play the same players who played second half on Saturday? Truly mind-boggling for me this obsession with giving fringe players game time in one of the 2 competitions we have a chance of winning.

The team were far from good enough. Why take the risk, and then compound it by bringing on Niasse while our two best forwards were on the bench?
I just don't get all this "we must give players a game". Play your best team if you want to win. It's simple..
We are just following a pattern set by Arsene Wenger where "top" clubs like to show that they don't need to play in the League Cup by playing kids. For my sake - but especially yours - I would like to win a trophy. At least I've seen us win 4 league titles, 3 FA cups and a European trophy.
Unfortunately, while we play along with the attitude that trophies don't matter, I despair of seeing us win another one.
