Everton Youth Teams Thread

@Eggs

A few common shouts on Gibson are that he is powerful...what are the actual differences/styles between him and Feeney?

I assume Gibson is a left footer...that would be a huge plus
Not seen much of Gibson tbh. He's a very stocky well built lad for his age and yes, he is left footed. The fact he got into that ultra talented England U17 squad one would assume he was decent on the ball too. Feeney is what I would call an old fashioned no nonsense defender, sort of in the Nesta mould. Is an organiser and, you would assume leader too as he captained England U18s last year.

Despite his age, Feeney has been around the U23 scene for nearly 3 years and you would assume is ahead in the pecking order at the moment.

Because he doesn't have the ability a full-back needs and won't ever from what I've seen of him England & Everton. He's the same as a Holgate or Galloway. These days full-backs need to be as good on the ball as wingers whereas he'd just be solid and unfussy which is a complete waste of a position on the pitch. Left-sided centre half I'll put my house on it.

Cheers guys, hopefully Feeney and Gibson are able to progress together and we may have a couple of home grown centre backs in a couple of seasons time.

The under 23 team from last season has largely been ripped apart as some of the key players have moved onto senior football.
It isn't surprising that we are struggling this season as we introduce new players to this level.
Before the start of this season I remember people saying we had a bit of a talent gap in the ages coming directly through after our really good U23 so overall I've been pleasantly surprised by the general U23 and U18 team performances this year. Possibly playing above themselves so far which means a struggle might be expected at some point in the season.

..if there’s one positive from the disastrous EL campaign it’s that a few lads have made their debuts and had a taste of first team football. It’s got to be a massive confidence booster, especially for the likes of Hornby and Gordon.

AC Milan did it for years and produced some of the best CBs the world has seen so you can bring your own through. You have to let them learn through their mistakes though and thats very difficult for modern fans.

For instance we found it hard with Stones (who I still have no doubt will become world class) and have our moments with Holgate too.

...from what i’ve seen of Gibson, though, he looks more like a first team prospect at LB. Saying that, he won’t have finished growing yet. He looks a strong lad and I notice him knock a few decent passes into the CF yesterday.

We should really focus on having a first 11 with the rest of the squad being u21s...I think its the only way to compete at the top and break through...

As an u21 comes into the first 11 and solidifies his spot we should be looking at another coming into the squad to compete with him and grow through targeting players for long term benefits. For all that people claimed we did that with Martinez, we didn't...

Wonder why @Nymzee and yourself have such different views on him...

Think the back up squad is now there mate. What we now need is a quality LCB, quality striker, I would say a quality left back as I'm afraid I'm losing faith in Baines' ability to go on beyond this season at this level, and a quality holding mid as Schneids goes missing far too much.

Funnily enough, apart from the holding mid, that's pretty much what we wanted (and didn't get) in the summer window.

Me and @Eggs possibly have a different view on what we think a full-back can/should do that's all.
I thought you did a very good summary on what you viewed was required of a modern full back mate, however I disagreed with your assessment of Gibson when he played full back for England and us.Playing for England U17s as left back in the Euros when he was at Newcastle was the first time I saw him, and he stood out as very solid and reliable , just what was needed in a multi talented attacking team .
While I take your point about full backs needing to provide good attacking intent , the priority for me is that they are good defenders. Of the young players we’ve tried at left back , Garbutt, Galloway and recently Charsley all had a degree of attacking intent but none have yet convinced they could take over from Baines as defenders. Gibson has all the basics of a good defender, he’s young enough to develop attacking skills say to a moderate but acceptable level. At full back I would rather have a good defender/ moderate attacker than a moderate defender/good attacker.
I think he’s the most likely of our young defenders to provide cover at left back, and if he eventually gets that chance in the first team he’ll get great experience, and then eventually be able to fight for a CB position, which like you I believe will be his ultimate position . Holgate has gone a similar way.

I thought the three central defenders did well yesterday until the final minutes, particularly Foulds on the left of the three who some , @Barnfred 55 ? I think, have also touted for the left back role. It’s always good to read the different opinions on here.

I believe Foulds is ultimately a LCB too in the longer term. I touted him and Gibson as the only viable alternatives to Martina for the LB position, from the fit and registered players we have within the club at the moment.

Agreed that I like my full-backs to be defensive first and foremost but the game has evolved so much over the last few years. Previously - right down into local youth football - the players with the least ability were a full-back but now they have to be able to do everything and be tremendous athletes. I think having someone of his ilk at LB is detrimental to our attacking football. I know he's young but I think even at 18 you should see if they'll be attacking or not. Kinda reminds me of that Panzo from the U17's as well but he looks a bit quicker.

I'm all for developing players but long term I don't see Gibson as a full-back just as I never saw Holgate either. They can do a job for you but you need more output these days.

I lost faith in baines 12months. Let’s sign a quality left back in Jan abd that will be the end of that
