Everton Youth Teams Thread

Before the start of this season I remember people saying we had a bit of a talent gap in the ages coming directly through after our really good U23 so overall I've been pleasantly surprised by the general U23 and U18 team performances this year. Possibly playing above themselves so far which means a struggle might be expected at some point in the season.
There’s no doubt last year’s 2nd year u18 and this year’s 2 years have been way below the standard of previous years. There have been a few individuals, Feeney, Evans, Beni last year, Hornby , Denny this but the overall standard of the players around them has been poor to average. Of the starting 11 for the Youth Cup match 6 were first year u18s . While this hopefully points to a bunch of talented , fast developing 1st years, it also backs up the statement that many of the 2nd years haven’t been good enough. Hornby of course and Con Ouzonidis , presumably injured, were the only two missing.

In both recent games, u18 and U23s , we seemed to have the same traits. Young defenders, who make mistakes but really do look “ good for their age”. Solid but unspectacular DFM pairings in Denny/ Scully and Beni/Adeniran who do the job but don’t provide attacking threat. A good striker leading the line , Mampala at U18, Hornby U23s, but lacking any regular, decent supply to them . In both games there was a dearth of exciting midfield play, only Gordon over the two games provided any real attacking flair, and an ability to open up a defence. For the u18s I thought it was the rigid 4-2-3-1 we used , but even the different u 23 formation didn’t provide any real attacking threat. But both teams are top four in their leagues so I guess they’re not doing too bad.

Agreed that I like my full-backs to be defensive first and foremost but the game has evolved so much over the last few years. Previously - right down into local youth football - the players with the least ability were a full-back but now they have to be able to do everything and be tremendous athletes. I think having someone of his ilk at LB is detrimental to our attacking football. I know he's young but I think even at 18 you should see if they'll be attacking or not. Kinda reminds me of that Panzo from the U17's as well but he looks a bit quicker.

I'm all for developing players but long term I don't see Gibson as a full-back just as I never saw Holgate either. They can do a job for you but you need more output these days.
Ay. I used to play full back:)

Actually, I started off as keeper in junior school. Moved on to right back, then centre mid and ended up as a striker and sometime winger. Wasn't very cultured if I'm honest but was very quick and willing.

Yeh I wasn't putting down any full-backs on the forum I just know from talking to some local youth coaches that's usually what happens. Strangely seen as the "safe" position (although with offsides not sure how it is).

...from what i’ve seen of Gibson, though, he looks more like a first team prospect at LB. Saying that, he won’t have finished growing yet. He looks a strong lad and I notice him knock a few decent passes into the CF yesterday.
I agree that when/if he breaks into the first team it will most likely be at left back. Whether we see his long term position there or at CB we'll need to wait and see.

I thought you did a very good summary on what you viewed was required of a modern full back mate, however I disagreed with your assessment of Gibson when he played full back for England and us.Playing for England U17s as left back in the Euros when he was at Newcastle was the first time I saw him, and he stood out as very solid and reliable , just what was needed in a multi talented attacking team .
While I take your point about full backs needing to provide good attacking intent , the priority for me is that they are good defenders. Of the young players we’ve tried at left back , Garbutt, Galloway and recently Charsley all had a degree of attacking intent but none have yet convinced they could take over from Baines as defenders. Gibson has all the basics of a good defender, he’s young enough to develop attacking skills say to a moderate but acceptable level. At full back I would rather have a good defender/ moderate attacker than a moderate defender/good attacker.
I think he’s the most likely of our young defenders to provide cover at left back, and if he eventually gets that chance in the first team he’ll get great experience, and then eventually be able to fight for a CB position, which like you I believe will be his ultimate position . Holgate has gone a similar way.

I thought the three central defenders did well yesterday until the final minutes, particularly Foulds on the left of the three who some , @Barnfred 55 ? I think, have also touted for the left back role. It’s always good to read the different opinions on here.

The truth is we were spoiled watching Baines in his prime for so long. He's past it now, and certainly can't get up the pitch like he used to, but 5-10 years ago I'm not sure there was a better 2 way LB in England. It's also not just physical ability, but the experience and brain to know when to go forward and when not to. I look at Kenny who in has been viewed as an attacking RB throughout his career, and gifted in his ability to get forward and put in crosses...but we haven't seen that much in the 1st team, for good reason I think. 1) You have to have a partner in midfield who can play with an attacking back, and 2) he's rightly focusing on his defensive duties with the occasional marauding run, rather than vice versa.

I'm with you in that I'd rather a defender be a top quality defender first, and at least proficient going forward rather than the other way around. However in the right team, you could get away with being better at going forward than defending, but we certainly don't have that balance right now.

Combine our defence with City's/Chelsea's offence and you'd have the perfect team.

Robinson must be ahead of him though don't you think?
Doesnt always work that way mate. He's certainly ahead in his development but it depends whether the coaching team believe he can make the step up. Often they hand the opportunity to a younger player they believe is more suited to open age football.

I like Robinson. He's an exciting attacking FB, but still has a lot to learn defensively. IMO Koeman made a mistake sending both him and Connolly on loan leaving no cover at LB. I would have liked to have sern Ribinson play WB in a 5.
