Everton Youth Teams Thread

not gonna lie never heard of con ouzanidis before today

didn't realise he's been with us since he was 11

...he played in that televised tournament last summer. Thought he did well last night (I only saw the 2nd half) alongside Mori, good size and mobility about him. We have lots of decent CBs below the first team, it’ll be interesting who’s still here next season.

I think your last sentence sums up the dilemma around Con Ouzounidis . I’ve long believed that we only had Denny and Hornby from the current 2nd year Scholars who are worthy of a professional contract. Ouzounidis in fairness has progressed this season, he’s a big strong guy ... but there’s a certain finesse lacking . If he’s selected for the U23s it means he’s showing something to Unsworth, and you’d think he’d be guaranteed a contract on the back of it. A year younger than him we have Michael Collins and Elliot Richards who have impressed me more as CBs than Ouzounidis did at the same age, but progress is a fickle thing at this age, some improve others stay the same , time will tell.

It surprises me sometimes how lacking in the basics some young players can be (not talking about the game last night specifically) defenders in particular almost seem afraid of the ball and just want to be rid of it. It surprises me because these are lads that spend hours everyday with the ball at their feet.

It make me think that they are picked because of their physicality rather than their football ability.

Learning On His Own?
Callum Connolly - impressing on-loan at Ipswich this season - has spoken of his surprise at the lack of support from Everton during his spell away from Goodison Park.

The midfielder, who has scored three goals this season and made 21 appearances. Of all Everton’s players out on loan, his has arguably been the greatest success.

But talking to the Ipswich Star he refused to commit his future, saying:

I’ve had contact with Everton, but not as much as I expected. I think they’ve just let me get on with my football.

There hasn’t been as much support as I’ve wanted to be honest, but obviously it’s a man’s game and I’m learning the game on my own.

Worrying, but not unexpected. It was Joe Royle's job to check in with the loanees. Since he went, it seems like no-one has bothered with them.

...absolutely, but unless you are a very classy defender (in the Holgate mould) then physique is vital in that position to deal with the power of PL CFs. It might explain why some who might not be as good are leapfrogged by defenders with more athleticism.

I remember Peter Clarke coming through but when he made his debut he didn’t look nearly as big and powerful as he did at youth level. Clarke has had a very good and lengthy career in the lower leagues.

Collins looks a really good player. Similar to Foulds but in my view better at equivalent ages.

It's a great point and probably my concern re Feeney. He has grown a fair bit recently but could do with another inch or 2 and filling out. He reminds me a bit of Clarke actually, in that he is a very impressive defender at the art of defending, great attitude, excels in youth football but the question may be his size.

You don’t have to be 6ft4 to be good in the air. But I get your point.

Interesting seeing the pictures from last night after the 2nd goal. And I know it’s hard to judge, but Gibson who I think is still only 17, looked similar in height to Mori, who I think is about 6ft1?
