Everton Youth Teams Thread

Yeah, takes it back to my original point of playing for the U23s being the standard to judge our u18. Gordon was playing U23s last season before his injury, aswas Hornby, but from memory Mampala never started, maybe sub. Last season I was initially more impressed with Adedoyin than Mampala , then Mampala started banging in the goals towards the end of the season. It is hard to judge these youngsters as I don’t see enough of them, both Sambou and Mampala have had games when they’ve looked physical goalscorers but then fade away again. All interesting stuff, it’s good fun watching the kids develop .

Just a shame we don’t get to watch them unless we live nearby. I mean they film all the bloody goals for U18/U23 so why can’t they give us the games! I don’t even mind paying for that sort of thing.

I think I stuck some stuff on Simms when we signed him mate. He was very highly rated at City too, not one of their best prospects but well thought of. United wanted him too and I think Liverpool so did well to get him.

He has done ok since coming in but has been a bit underwhelmed by Gordon.

I like the lad, he is very big and strong and knows where the net is. Sometimes he looks a bit lethargic to me though. I'd like to see him dominating sides a bit more.

I think moving up to Unsworth would be good for him in that regard. It would also be a good barometer. Sambou/Manasse would provide good competition as would Hornby. They are all very useful players for that level, and Hornby may begin forcing himself on the first team fixture if he keeps getting better. I don't think Unsworth is necessarily the best coacher of strikers, but in terms of firstly Niasse and then Calvert Lewin he really helped them in becoming more rounded footballers. I'd say that would help Simms.

Either way it's good to see the 18's and 23's towards the top of their leagues. I know as a club we haven't been that bothers by that, and focussed a lot on progressing on younger players. However it's not bad thing and certainly if the club wants to go on to be a major competitor at senior level, instilling those standards from (at least) the 18's up becomes important. So too does making it harder for each player to move up an age group.
I'm not questioning your judgement here Catcher, but where have you seen enough of young Simms to declare that he isn't dominating games.?

I saw quite a bit of him in that pre season tournament 2017 soon after he joined from City. Whilst I agree he was outshone in that tournament by Gordon, he did nevertheless impress and ended up top scorer IIRC. I was then surprised by his lack of starts for the U18s last season, but perhaps that was down to the form of Adedoyin initially, and then Mampala later on. Obviously Gordon was in outstanding form last season too up until his injury.

It's only really this season that I've seen anything of the lad, and even that is just the goals on the OS, usually about 4 days after the game has been played. I've been very impressed by the quality of his goals, but would have liked to have seen more extended highlights so I could see his overall play and how he effects the game. So it was interesting to see your highlighted comments and how you came about them.

As a footnote he does seem quite a bit bigger than I remember him in that tournament 15 months ago. Not saying he wasn't big for his age then, but he's really stand out now.

Thats a fair point mate. I haven't seen a lot of him for us but saw some of the pre-season games. I think I put it on here that for me he looks to go through the motions a bit too much for my liking. He's physically very strong, a monster for that level. He has to avoid the Brewster/Hope trap of just relying on his physicality though.

Personally I will judge him on the 23's. Playing up against lads who are 20/21 and good players will be a far bigger barometer for me and one where you will see if he can do other parts of the game. I have no doubt he has pace/strength and can finish but you do need a bit more.

Either way we are in a good position with young forwards really. The 2 you mentioned above has just turned 18 as well and have looked a right handful. Hornby is also ticking along very nicely (and I thought played well in his game in Europe). That competition will do all of them no harm. You are looking at which of them can start to put a bit of a run together for the 23's.

Oh don’t get me started on that again!, had a mini fume the other day when I saw the latest WeAre Everton Membership. ad , which I’ve paid for , where it indicates live streaming of U23s AND u18 as a benefit

Ryan Astley started for Wales U19s yesterday in their 1-0 away win against Ireland. No mention of him in the Irish match reports , but it can only be good as a 16 year old playing up an age at international level . Wales are not the strongest at youth levels , but have a good reputation of moving them up through the ranks . Ethan Ampadu who played at full level the last two Wales games was in the U19 at 16 two years ago , it was the team where Nathan Broadhead and the RS s Ben Woodburn were scoring lots of goals.

Saw Anthony Gordon playing for England U18 against Russia. Seems to have grown since last season, always thought of him as small but he seemed to be quite tall now. They played him as the advanced midfielder in a 4-3-3.

A very good player mate. Did a bit on him a couple of months back. Only issue is he's only a little lad, but looks great footballer. There's another slight lad with a similar wedge cut who plays in the 10 who's also brilliant to watch.

The player in question is Mckenzie Hunt who scored from right midfield last game. Looks a really clever player and great to watch.
