Been reading some really thought provoking things about academies recently.
Firstly the former England development coach who was saying 99% of development is about the player and his innate talent. You can have the best facilities, the best coaches, the best experiences possible for a group of super talented kids....and then someone will walk in who has only ever kicked a ball around with their mates and they'll be the best player on the pitch.
Second was an article which examined the Dynamo Zagreb academy - regarded as the best in the world for development - and the age in which they'd recruited the talents that made them famous. Now they bring in players from 7 and have a famous pathway which teaches all the elements of the game. Yet it turned out the ones who had gone on to star for Croatia had actually joined in their mid teens or later.
Point was that by far the most important thing an academy can do is recruit well. All the best coaches in the world won't make a difference if you don't get the best kids in and show them a pathway to the first team.
