Everton Youth Teams Thread

Lost. Terrible.

Best bit was Marcel Brands was sat right behind me.

Would have snook up to the posh seats had I known Marcel was there. Think he might be quite busy over the next few transfer windows(do they have them at this level?) raising the standard of the U23's based on tonights performance.

I'm sure he is, just didn't look tall compared to others around him. Didn't seem to miss much in the air whatever his actual height.
I’ve been impressed the times I’ve seen him, fingers crossed he can kick on. The dead rubber European game, I know it was only against Limassol. Considering his partner was Besic, who went walk about a few times I though he had a great game.

And Keown who was co commentating, praised him a lot, especially about his positioning and was saying he looked like it came natural to him.

..regarding young promising centre backs, I am reminded of Peter Clark and Sean O’Hanlon from yesteryear who couldn’t quite make the breakthrough at Everton but who had lengthy and successful careers in the lower leagues. I remember watching Clark in an England U21 shirt at Goodison playing against a Portugal team containing Christiano Ronaldo, and O’Hanlon was part of a very good Everton youth team.

It’s so hard to make the step up and it’s so difficult to predict who might do it.

He was better than Michael Dawson that day Clarke. Jagielka played in that game too.

I do think physique is important with younger centre backs. The lads with a huge physique tend to have what it takes to make it. Either that or you have to be very good on the ball. But even Holgate who is that was badly exposed in the last 2 games.

Fennel looks technically and positionally very good. However centre forwards would really fancy a chance at him. I'm sure when he's 22 and fully matured physically (or closer to it) he will be a good defender, but as always not sure he will wait that long or whether playing reserves football for 3 years will help him more than playing league football.
