Everton Youth Teams Thread

I wonder if Baines’s personality will ultimately count against him in that he’s a no fuss , get on with the job, doesn’t seek the limelight person. Will this prevent him getting more senior roles, I know it’s been mentioned that he’s been approached by lower league clubs? As far as I can tell he’s doing a fine job with the u18s , he’s got some decent players, his tactics look good, he’s flexible in how he uses players and gets results as well as improving the teamwork.
He’s older than Rooney , but is almost the polar opposite , with Rooney writing many good articles , showing a good analysis of situations but it seems unable to put his theories into practice. Meanwhile Baines is quietly going about his business of becoming a good coach.
Baines certainly seems to be going the right way about things in taking time to learn the craft of coaching, which Rooney hasn't really done.

Does he want more senior roles?
Some coaches love to work with players at the developmental stage as that's what they are strong at, they don't want all the stuff that comes with senior football

…it’s a good point but I’d maybe more use the Colin Harvey analogy. He was an outstanding Academy coach, almost certainly the best I’ve seen at Everton but he was also able to brilliantly to working alongside Kendall. What he found difficult was the transition to team manager and maybe more specifically, transfer policy (not now in scope with DoF model).

Yep , I think there’s something in that . He’s seems quite content with his life , family etc , doesn’t push himself into the limelight and rumours are he turned down offers from lower league clubs.

I’ll be happy to see Armstrong starting tonight , then it’s back to reality of the gap there is between u21 and our first team . I would love to see Omari Benjamin on the bench but I’m not clear if he’s had much exposure to the first team , better than 2 goalkeepers though .Calum Bates has had some exposure so maybe on the bench . Other youngsters like Graham, Mills, Onyango are injured .

Baines/ Coleman may be hampered by the lack of time before this match though.

Tonight would be a great opportunity to give Benjamin some time on the pitch. Not saying he’s going to be a legend, and I mean this only as an approach to managing. But look at the likes of Rooney, Messi, Beckham who all came on as a teenager and impressed. Now we look back on it and think of course how obvious the decision should have been. Sometimes the system is too rigid. Take off the training wheels and see what happens. You never know how an U-21 will do if they never get a chance.

….ha, ha very few of them play for a reason, fella, and if we had a Rooney, Messi or Beckham in our U21s I guarantee they’d be on the pitch tonight.

Oh I totally agree. And I wasn’t meaning Benjamin specifically. You’re right. I’m saying as a philosophy going forward I think we should be mixing in the new (JOB) with the old (Coleman, Young). Trying an U21 against a lower side (we’re running out of options below us 😂 ) playing next to Branthwaite. Even 10-15 minutes. See what they’ve got. Even seeing Armstrong get some minutes changed the dynamics a bit.
