I think next Summer, possibly even January, we’ll see a real cull at academy level.
To me an U23 team shouldn’t really have anyone over the age of 20 playing for them maybe even 19.

On first reading , I thought “ That’ll never work or be practicable” . Then I thought what a great basis to have though. It wouldn’t work at the moment because as much as we laud it our Academy isn’t good enough to produce the numbers needed. 19 year olds are essentially 1 year out of the Academy, 20 yr olds 2 years out. For the past two years our Academy has been poor compared to previously in terms of numbers graduating to full time professionals , only five or six in each year . So about 12 19/20s available , plus any we’ve bought in in the two years , say 4 per year, 8, giving about 20 available in total , not enough for a squad at this level .
But wouldn’t it be exciting if that was our policy to only play 19 and 20 year olds!It would mean we would have to develop about ten youngsters per year from our Academy and supplement them with other talented youngsters , Brands and Unsworth’s job. We would have to make significant investment in our scouting , facilities etc to do this . While people deride them , Chelsea have this “production line” model in place, from 15 onwards their players dominate numerically the England squads, then they buy in some more.
Then someone else will take the view , “ Why bother.?, Save your money and just buy in players , we had no Academy graduates in last Saturday’s starting lineup , and the three subs who turned the game were all bought in ...... “ All good stuff !
Yeh I just notice we quite often have an "older" team compared to the other U23 sides we face. Yes we're successful in the league but that's quite irrelevant to me in the end. It'll take a year or two of some heavy outside recruitment and sales to get us anywhere near that level.
Maybe we do now but that wasn’t the norm on previous season at that level.Yeh I just notice we quite often have an "older" team compared to the other U23 sides we face. The season 15/16 I’m sure we finished 3rd we had a very young side that season and the following season we won the league witty a lot of teenagers playing regular.
We didn't used too, we'd often be one of the youngest. I would say we are towards the average now, maybe at the slightly higher end with lads like Browning.
..in his post match interview after the Arsenal game, Unsworth suggested Browning and Feeney are too good for U23 level.
Forgot to ask where did you read/listen to this interview?
...not sure if it’s on OS, but I picked up the interview on an Everton News Now link. Unsworth was also very complimentary about the RB.
