Everton Youth Teams Thread

..in his post match interview after the Arsenal game, Unsworth suggested Browning and Feeney are too good for U23 level.
Browning is 24 and I think is easily championship quality. His loans have always been hampered by injuries, as has his career to be fair. Personally think he should be sold in January as he is blocking a place in the team for the likes of Ouzounidis and Astley. Arguably we shouldn't be playing him at all.

Feeney needs to go out on loan, probably at Championship level. He needs to be tested against men before risking in the first team.

Definitely with him, speaks volumes for Galloway’s regresion that he’s not deemed too good at that level.

I want to see Feeney go on a really tough loan at a say League 2 team. Toughen him up.
I agree that he'll be tested physically at that level. But I also want him to be tested technically too. Championship for me.

That’s ideal but we’ve seen with our Championship loans, who will play them every week? Moreso at that level. He’s got time on his hands to move up the leagues. People like Pickford benefitted massively playing in leagues where arguably results matter more.

..i’m sure Browning would’ve been sold in the summer had there been any takers. The player himself might be more than happy to run down his highly paid contract and negotiate as lucrative move as possible next summer. Whether he’s sold in January or not might be out of Everton’s control.

You're probably right Eggs. In which case I wouldn't play him. We aren't going to offer him a new contract and we won't get any sort of fee for him when he leaves. So why play him when he's taking up a valuable development spot within the youth set up.? Let him fester if he's just taking the shilling. We have to be hard on these players Eggs.

There is that risk of course, but it will only be a half season loan at this stage anyway. I think he's good enough for the championship so I'd take that risk personally.

The thing about the lad is that he's a defender first and foremost. Think he'll do well at that level.

I’d rather him play regularly in the academy than warm the bench in the Championship myself.

But you don't know he will be warming the bench Nymz. You're making that assumption, presumably because you think he won't be good enough. I think he will be. Thing is, until we send him out there we don't know. What we do know is that he won't learn anything new playing in the U23s where he has been a regular since he was 16.

It’s not a question of ability really it’s more where would he go. A top Championship team won’t need him, a struggling team can’t risk him. Would a middle team bother? It just happens all too often with loans - not just our club - we saw it with Dowell last season when Forest were going down the pan.

He won’t learn anything, I never said he shouldn’t go on loan.

Still think we need to give it a try. We don't know he won't be played and, as you now say, he won't learn anything new in the u23s. For me, he's better than Pennington, Connolly, Browning and Robinson who have all had spells in the championship where they got an acceptable amount of playing time. We can't NOT loan players out just in case they won't be played. He has to be exposed to adult football at the appropriate level. Were he a year or two younger then the lower divisions would probably have been the place to start. But he's better than that now and has to be exposed at a higher standard. If we loan him out in January it'll only be for 6 months anyway. He'll probably need another full season out on loan and I'd make sure there was a clause to bring him back during the transfer window should he not be getting sufficient game time.
