Yeah it does look that way. Phillips and Mampala are in the same year as Hornby and have a contract until June 19 , so they’re going to have to prove themselves at U23s level to get another contract. Throw in Gordon who's a different type of attacker but same year as Simms and Adedoyin , then add in Sambou who’s a bit older and you’ve got seven young attackers, a richness of attackers/strikers indeed.
All seven have shone at some time, but harsh reality is if one comes through to be a first team regular it will be fantastic and save us £30 mill for a striker or even back up striker. Two coming through would be really amazing , any more would be very unlikely. So which one(s) do people think will make it.?
You have to be harsh to try to answer that.I’d eliminate Sambou and Mampala as they haven’t done enough at U23s level. We haven’t see Simms, Adedoyin, Phillips at U23s yet so cant judge. But then neither Gordon or Hornby have shone at U23s either this season. A lovely discussion to be having , makes a change from recent years when it’s been midfielders/ DMids where we had the riches.
I think it's a really fair point you are making. The reality is that 5/6 players will not come into the first team at the same sort of time in the same position. It is very difficult to make judgements really, as each player is different in terms of style, but also in terms of where they are in their "journey" but all of them are improving and performing impressively. If I were to assess each I would say;
Sambou- I ultimately don't think he will make it here. He has just turned 21 so is in and around the same age as Calvert Lewin who has 50+ first team appearances. I don't think he will do enough development now to put himself in the frame, and his performances while commendable are not banging the door down for selection, which at 21 they really need to be. That being said he looks a lad very likely to make a decent career out of the game in the lower leagues. He has all the attributes to survive and even thrive in the lower leagues and with that exposure may well make his way back. He is quick, strong but a bit erratic for me. I think he may well end up back at the championship, probably following a move to a league 1/2 side.
Mampala: While he is a year older, he is young within that year group and only turned 18 in July. He has game time in the reserves since he was 17 which is a good indicator. Unsworth seems to like him. His goalscoring record at under 18's was much improved last season (11 in 18 against 3 in 17 the season before) so is clearly kicking on. He also looks a big quick physical player. I really wouldn't rule him out, but needs to continue his development.
Phillips: I'm not entirely sold on him. He had a bad injury and is in great form this season. I saw him a bit in pre-season and he didn't look to have much of an x-factor to me, however his record is extremely good so far this season, so if that continues who knows?
Ellis Simms: Looks a really good prospect. Was highly thought of when he left City (United were very keen) and underwhelmed a bit to begin with. However lots of positive talk from Tait so far about how he's getting better which has to be a positive. However difficult it is, he needs to get himself into the under 23's which will be a better test for him. My concern is there are a lot of similarities with Delial Brewster and Hallam Hope before him, who were both big lads who relied in size alone. We shall see.
Fraser Hornby: Got 13 in 17 for the under 18's 2 years ago (similar to Mampala) but as yet hasn't been prolific for the reserves though he does have a very promising record at international level and has put in some good performances. I like him. He looks a good target man to me. Being a former midfield player he also has a nice touch and can bring others in. He's probably the nearest to the first team and would give us something a little different, but does probably need to make the jump up quite soon as Dominic Calvert Lewin did 2 years ago.
Adedoyin: Seems to be a lot of chat about this lad. As an under 17 he has 10 goals in 19 games for the under 18's (compare that to Mampala 3 in 17 at a similar age). There is a lot of talk about him, and looks as if he can operate in wide positions too. I think he may be the best of the strikers.
Gordon: For me he is the best prospect, with the first team as an under 17 and a regular in the reserves. Probably not fair to lump him in with the others who are all number 9's. I think he has the best chance of making it. Looks to have great positional awareness, speed, ball control and finishing ability. Also his record of 14 goals, 4 assists in 15 games as an under 17 is a fantastic record.
An odd left field shout, is Nathan Broadhead looks very sharp in games I am seeing this season.
