Everton Youth Teams Thread

Still think we need to give it a try. We don't know he won't be played and, as you now say, he won't learn anything new in the u23s. For me, he's better than Pennington, Connolly, Browning and Robinson who have all had spells in the championship where they got an acceptable amount of playing time. We can't NOT loan players out just in case they won't be played. He has to be exposed to adult football at the appropriate level. Were he a year or two younger then the lower divisions would probably have been the place to start. But he's better than that now and has to be exposed at a higher standard. If we loan him out in January it'll only be for 6 months anyway. He'll probably need another full season out on loan and I'd make sure there was a clause to bring him back during the transfer window should he not be getting sufficient game time.

Well I was really only saying 6 months L1 or L2 and then a full preseason and year with a Championship team. I rate him but he’s untested and not sure a Championship team would go for him.

If you'd actually said that in the first place Nymz I wouldn't have argued with you so much.lol

You should know by now you need to spell it out to old gits like me. Despite my grand age I haven't yet developed the art of reading peoples minds.

Any idea what?. The club not great at giving out information on our young players. We only knew Hornby had an op because he put it on his twitter. I still don't know what injury he has.
I posted here hoping somebody who follows the youth teams closer might have more information.

The article I read suggested Lewis Gibson missed the beginning of the season with injury, made his return Vs Arsenal the other day and was unfortunately stretchered off and supposedly in a lot of pain.

No word on the actual damage.

Ok. Yeah I'd already seen that article myself. Thought you may have heard something through a connection to the club. Hopefully the injury isn't as bad as it appeared. You always fear the worse when a player is stretchered off in obvious pain.

Always difficult to tell,Gana looked like he's copped for a bad one last week but it turned out OK.You'd think the clubs official site might report on injuries...

..it’s a critical time in the lads development and it will be so sad if he’s suffered another bad one. The club are useless with this sort of communication.

They're bad enough reporting on first team players mate. You get nothing at allon the youth players, even those from the U23s.

On the same site I saw the Gibson report mentioned, I also saw one on Feeney saying he had 2 lots of corrective knee surgery earlier this year. I'm assuming that one of them was late summer because he was reported to have been back in full training when pre season started, and then we heard nothing again until he turned up on the bench for the U23s a couple of weeks ago, over 3 months later.

It's quite poor really.

Most of us who enjoy the youth football believe the clubs coverage of it in general is very poor.

Barkley had one at a similar age, maybe a year younger, and came through OK. But yeah, it can completely derail a players development. Fingers crossed. I know you particularly like this kid Eggs.

You're probably right Eggs. In which case I wouldn't play him. We aren't going to offer him a new contract and we won't get any sort of fee for him when he leaves. So why play him when he's taking up a valuable development spot within the youth set up.? Let him fester if he's just taking the shilling. We have to be hard on these players Eggs.

That's probably what we'll do after Jan if he's not sold. Tbf, although it is halting development for one, it's giving the rest an opportunity to play alongside and learn from someone who's more experienced, with prem league experience.

I think next Summer, possibly even January, we’ll see a real cull at academy level. There was a distinct lack of business (in and out) this year but that made sense with Brands just coming in.

The U23 squad in particular is massive and full of people that just will not make it here. Players like Charsley and Sambou (both 21) aren’t even training with the first team and are being overtaken by younger, more talented players - why keep them around? I know some players develop later but we seem to be a bit too sentimental within the academy about keeping players longer than we should.

To me an U23 team shouldn’t really have anyone over the age of 20 playing for them maybe even 19.

..yep, there needs to be a point where these players move up or move on. There might be a fear that one or two who leave might turn out to be good but perhaps that can be factored into transfer deals. 2 years for a first professional contract is probably the way to go, then it’s make your mind up time.
