Only in the event that he goes on loan to a decent championship side in January, and does really well showing that he is a level above. The chances of him doing this are, admittedly, very slim.
But in fairness to the player, his career to date has been extremely hampered by injuries. As a youth, he was the standout player in his age group playing for the U21s from age 17 and winning numerous England International caps across the different ages. His spells with both Preston and Sunderland were both hindered by his injuries. I disagree with you completely regarding his spell at Preston. His only played a handful of games before being ruled out for the rest of the season, and I recall the manager and fans were very impressed with his performances. In fact Simon Grayson, manager of Preston at the time, was happy to take him on loan again at Sunderland the following summer.
This spell now is the first time in probably 6 years that he has put a number of games together, and I don't think I've ever seen a player look so out of place at that level. That, of course, is no guarantee that he could do it at championship level or above. But surely, if there is just the slightest chance that we have a very good defender on our books, surely it makes sense to test that by sending him out on loan in January and closely following his performances. It costs us nothing.
