Everton Youth Teams Thread

...I wonder if they’re looking at Astley at full back. He’s clearly highly thought of, my concern (at this stage) is his physicality.

Possibly, has the ability, but he is still only 17 after all. Maybe a back 3 and then him and Charsley at wing back?

Either way I find Unsworths team selections this season random as Hell. Every game it's been completely different.

...good shout. They clearly think lots of Astley, especially as the general strategy appears to be keeping lad’s in their own age group. Simms starting as well.

Has Simms moved up from U18's now?
Think it could be more to do with there been no u18s games the last week or so and none till near mid Jan,but if he has not,it probably wont be long, but he wont want to move up to be a sub for the u23s all the time, theres another u23s game the week before the u18s return so he may play again then

Everton moved top of the table after a 1-0 win home v derby,Derbys 2nd lost in a row,and our 1st league win in 3 games,Derby were close to making it 1-1 a few times

I watched a stream of Wales U19s v San Marino U19s last month where Astley played at right back , he was probably the youngest and least experienced in the Wales team. He did ok and was sound defensively, but came more into it when they switched to a back three with him as the right CB. Astley is very precise with his short passing , almost always uses a side foot , follow through technique for the short ones , though he is good at longer balls too. I say this because, for me, he doesn’t have the pace and natural attacking ability looked for in a modern full back and was looking to pass the ball forward to a midfielder and then stopped. He rarely showed any attacking intent, or looked to get the ball back in a forward position.
I think he’s only started 2or 3 U23s games, so it makes sense to give him experience even if it’s right back. But our trend seems to be to use attacking midfielders/ wingers as our full backs in U23s/u18 teams e.g. Charsley, John , and Zuk at u18 . This also reflects on how we want the first team full backs to play.
It’s hard to tell re physicality as they can grow quickly, this time last year we had a ginger haired waif in Gordon , the last England u18 photo I saw he was one of the tallest in the back row.
