Everton Youth Teams Thread

....terrific defensive header by Astley in the 2nd half was a ‘that’ll do me moment’ but I think the whole of that team is more about spirit, togetherness and solidity in all areas than individual talent.

Virginia is looking the part as well.

I saw Astley and was very impressed with him tonight. I think the header was when he was under pressure at the back post? I can't remember if it was the same move or a different one, but there was a moment where he reacted brilliantly and won a 70-30 against him to clear the ball and stop a likely goal. For all the talk of modern defenders being able to carry the ball out, I do like them being able to defend first. I think they get a good education in that under Unsworth. Protect your goal at all costs.

He is very impressive for an under 18. Lots of talk about Gordon and John who are highly rated but he has arguably a bigger claim than them. Looks a regular and looks natural in the team. I doubt he will be a long term right back (for me centre back, or in midfield) but he's doing no harm showing he can fill in there. He already looks about 6ft-6 ft 1 to me. If he keeps growing a bit hopefully he ends up around 6 ft 3 and really imposing. (Both Feeney and Gibson were shorter than him at the same age).

We are very good at producing players for first team like Astley. The key is going to be what does he have over say Kenny, or Connolly who have got really close but probably fallen at the final hurdle a bit. He's a lot bigger than both, which is a big positive to me.

We have 3 really promising young centre backs for me. I've said before Feeney may not quite have enough. I base a lot of this on his age really. If he was 18 months younger I'd suggest he'd have a great chance.

As for Virginia, I thought he was excellent tonight. Looks a fair bit taller as well on further reflection. Could be another really shrewd buy from Brands. I like the lad in midfield too.
