'Bit' being the key word in that sentence!
I just got the feeling last year that it was all about winning, rather than developing players. The cynic in me would say that was to the benefit of his own CV.
I half expected Marcel to have brought in a new U23 manager by now who would be more in line with the more open style of football the club is looking to play throughout it's ranks. The fact that he hasn't leads me to believe that Unsworth is fully on board and I'm actually doing him a dis-service.
Unsworth is being kept at the club by one man, and his name is not Marcel Brands. He should really be managing somewhere full time by now, he's had plenty of years in the under 23s and even some experience managing Everton's first team.
The youth setup needs a revamp in the coaching department, Brands said the youth teams were going to be one of his primary focuses so he needs to be allowed to bring in his own team. The jobs for the boys era won't come to an end until we're rid of Kenwright though.
That is one explanation mate but I truly hope it is not the correct one. The thought of Kenwright, or anybody else on the board for that matter, obstructing Brands from doing what he believes necessary in reshaping the footballing side of the club, scares the hell out of me.Unsworth is being kept at the club by one man, and his name is not Marcel Brands. well im sure unsworth has done everything asked of him, produced players for the 1st team and produced winning teams.
only thing hes not done for the most part is got them playing exciting football but its hard to do with constant personnel changes.
In the 5 years he's been in charge of them there's been 2 players (Davies and Kenny) who have played any significant amount of first team games, and even they're barely fringe players.
I honestly think Unsworth's skillset is better suited to managing a first team rather than developing youngsters. He's shown he can set teams up to get results at that level, and I think his style would work in the lower leagues. But as far as our young players improving by playing under him, I just don't see it.
DCL and holgate were u23 players 1st
DCL was playing in the first team within 3 months of signing for the club, he didn't exactly progress through the academy.
Holgate signed for us when he was 19 so it's hard to know if he actually improved during his time playing in the U23s. He did become something of a first teamer for a bit though, yes.
Hardly 12 months considering how much had to be done first with thefirst team and also the rest.of the set up. This season will really be the guide what improvements have been made and I reckon Brands will act pretty quickly if any of the junior teams play a style that does not fit his plans.Marcel has had 12 months to work with Unsworth, this season I think we will see whether there is any change in playing style for the under 23’s. It also depends on whether the players are capable of changing to a different style. It is probably easier to get senior pros to adapt to a different style than it is youngsters, especially if that is the way they have been coached over the last few years from under 16’s upwards.
Well the u18s played a different style last season to the U23s , closer to the 1st team style. That is partly due to U18 football being a lot loser defensively allowing a much more attacking game, and we had the u18 players to exploit it. The U23s League is a big step up for u18, too big for some, and there are fewer goals and tighter defences but we have four decent attackers moving up, two midfielders looking capable of making an impact and an attacking right back . All have played in an attacking system last season and it will be very disappointing if we continue to play the same way at U23s this season.Marcel has had 12 months to work with Unsworth, this season I think we will see whether there is any change in playing style for the under 23’s.
