Everton Youth Teams Thread

David Unsworth declared “we can play even better” after his Everton Under-23s side produced a devastating display of attacking football to beat Southampton 8-2 in a remarkable Premier League 2 clash on Friday night.

The Toffees fell two goals behind at Southport FC’s Pure Stadium but went on to overwhelm the Saints with a performance rich in verve, invention and ruthlessness.

The electric Anthony Gordon hit a first-half brace to ensure the young Blues went in to half-time on level terms. He has now scored five goals in his past three matches.

Everton - who had drawn their opening three Premier League 2 matches - ratcheted up the pressure after the break and, after defender Matty Foulds headed them in front, continued to pour forward with speed and purpose.

Harry Charsley scored the young Blues’ fourth, and Antony Evans, Alex Denny, Morgan Feeney and substitute Manasse Mampala also got on the scoresheet as Unsworth’s team ran riot.

“It’s a great result - and second half it was a great performance - but we can play even better,” said Unsworth.

“I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I know we can improve.

“We missed a number of opportunities and their goalkeeper was probably their best player.

“I’m delighted for the boys, though. There were some really good performances attacking-wise.

“It’s a decent start to the season now, with three draws and the win tonight. We feel we’re getting there – but we’re not the finished article yet. “

With the Premier League 2 champions in a spot of bother after Saints established a two-goal lead on 33 minutes, in-form forward Gordon stepped up to the mantle.

His first goal – which came almost instantaneously after Southampton’s second - was a peach.

The England Under-19 international showcased his quick feet to work some space 20 yards out, before expertly curling a precision finish into the bottom corner. Southampton goalkeeper Jack Bycroft was helpless.

With his already sky-high confidence given another boost, Gordon set off on a electric dart at the Saints backline just three minutes later.

The Southampton defenders had no answer, and the 18-year-old was bundled over in the box for a clear penalty.

Gordon took the kick himself, sending Bycroft the wrong way to get the Toffees back on terms.

“It was a top performance from Anthony,” Unsworth said. “He looks very dangerous in that central role – getting into space and running at defenders. He’s adding goals to his game now, which is the end product which we always wanted.”

Southampton had taken the lead midway through the opening period, Christoph Klarer prodding in from a corner. They doubled their lead through striker Marcus Barnes, who finished at the second time of asking after Harry Tyrer made a fine stop from his initial effort.

The Blues’ response was immediate and Gordon’s brace was followed by a sustained spell of pressure.

The young forward had the chance to complete his hat-trick early in the second half but saw his penalty cannon off the post. Gordon had won the spot-kick himself after being scythed down by Saints defender Kayne Ramsay.

Everton did not have to wait long to hit the front, Foulds heading in from Evans’ devilish corner delivery.

And Charsley made it four after capitalising on some hesitation in the Southampton defence to steal possession and slot past Bycroft

Evans’ corner deliveries were causing havoc and Denny bundled home from another inviting centre to make it 5-2.

“Antony’s always had the ability to deliver a set-piece, he can put it anywhere with spin, dip and pace,” Unsworth added.

Everton were relentless at this point and Evans got on the scoresheet himself when he raced clear before lashing into the bottom corner, before Morgan Feeney’s first-time finish made it 7-2.

Substitute Manasse Mampala rounded off the scoring, firing in after another splendid crossfield pass from Evans.

“We’ve got a two-week break before our next match, and it’s a good way to go into it,” Unsworth added.

“We’ll be working very hard over this period.

"We’ll be honing in on what we want for the rest of the season.”

Saints Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi said it was a humbling night for his young side on the road at Premier League 2 champions Everton on Friday.
Saints, who had a particularly young side on show, shipped eight goals, six in the second-half, having gone two goals up in the first period.

While explaining that the performance was far from characteristic for his youngsters, Jaïdi also accepted that the levels achieved against Everton were below expectation, and wants to see a quick reaction ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Forest Green Rovers.

“We have to hold our hands up tonight and say that the performance wasn’t good enough,” the Under-23s coach asserted. “Certainly the result was not good enough and everyone is very disappointed. We cannot hide from that.

“There are players that I expect better from, who just didn’t perform at the right level tonight.

“Everton are a good side who won the league last year and played with a lot of experience, compared to us who were very young.

“The circumstances were difficult, but still we didn’t give a good account of ourselves. The message has to be now that, from a development point of you, I expect the boys to react and bounce back very quickly.

“It was a very poor performance but we need to put it behind us quickly because we face Forest Green on Tuesday, who will be an even tougher test than Everton.”

If they have serious hopes for Simms, then he shpuld be playing every game, even if that means the team loses. I don't see the point of Charsley, Evans etc playing just so we can tank teams full of really young players. We need to produce players and playing players at 23s level who have no prospect whatsoever of making it at senior level, is a waste of time.

It's great to see Gordon progressing. He got his chance and is taking it.

Charsley I agree with because he’s not under contract but there’s so much more to youth development then many people see. If Gordon is the one who they see as a star, and Evans helps to get the best out of Gordon, then you play Evans. It’s done the world over in youth teams in all sports, and yet some people are too blinkered to accept that doing things they don’t like might not necessarily mean it’s a terrible idea.

Makes sense, though if thats the case perhaps we should have signed a couple of foreign kids to come in and aid him further...

Does seem very geared to bringing one player along.

Despite us scoring for fun,Unsworth did not even bring simms on as one of the 3 subs,Simms is not getting many Mins so far

...i’m not one for criticising the Manager when I don’t know what’s going on. Simms might have a slight knock, he might not be pulling out the stops in training, or he might not be good enough. There might be a valid reason for not bringing him on.

Perhaps we should, but not sure that would be unsworths fault.

I’m not trying to say that’s definitely the plan, but these are the type of things that do happen and the things so many people just don’t see. It’s not just Gordon, maybe they think Gibson will develop more with a leader next to him and so kept Feeney, maybe they genuinely rate baningime and think he lost a bit of confidence when he moved up and they want to rebuild it in the under 23s.

I’ve worked with youth development squads in cricket at a high level, and these are the things you have to think about, not just whether some fans would like to see new faces.

I think people underestimate the leap from U23’s to PL football.

...they do, it’s a massive gulf, especially for a forward player where the skill set has to be high. Saying that, they have to be standing out at U23 to have any chance, and Gordon is clearly doing that. He’s also been involved at that level for a few seasons despite his age (although I think he was a bit disappointing last season).

All we can say is the signs are good, but Silva and the coaches will know from how he’s coping with first teamers in training.

Oh God, the “play Gordon in the first team” shouts have started early.

My quote below at half time, thank goodness he missed a penalty, a hat trick would have caused “Gordon must play “ petitions . We all want him in the first team squad... at the right time

Yep repeated broken record time mate , I feel the tide is turning though , instead of just a few of us banging the Gordon drum once the Echo does its “ next big thing” report tomorrow, there’ll be multi threads and Polls on GOT demanding he starts ahead of Kean , Richarlison and Iwobi on Sunday lol
