Everton Youth Teams Thread

How many come through any youth setup to play for their team over a 10 year period for a club? I think that’s a decent return.

Rodwell btw. Hibbert wasnt exactly established when he took over in 2002 either (though he didn’t give him his debut granted).

Pretty sure he gave Ross his debut too
It's easy to give players their debuts, much harder to build on that. Moyes showed that. Barkley was very badly managed in his development years. he'd be left out whenever he'd had a poor game. He'd be left twiddling his thumbs on the bench even when games where already decided.

Bainsy retiring, many of the first team not up to scratch, what are thoughts on an inevitable shake-up and opportunities for more of our youth to be given a chance to get around the first team? Simms and Baningime featuring on the bench but not on the pitch, but only a matter of time before they're given game time. Who's next to step up do you reckon?

You need to take this in the context of the last 6 games where there have been some pretty appalling performances , particularly from the midfielders. So sadly I’d say if Carlo is not trusting Beni Benigime over the likes of Davies, Siggi, Bernard, then it’s hard to see him featuring in his plans , but would love to be wrong.
Simms was always behind Kean for a shot at striker, so no surprise there . He’ll get his chance preseason , potentially he could take it, but I’d say he is probably a year behind Gordon , so it may be mid next season before his chance comes , or he may well be on loan then.
The other three youngsters in the squad we know about, Branthwaite, Gordon and Virginia . Beyond these it’s hard to see anybody who’s next to step up from our current U23s , maybe returning from loan Lewis Gibson and new French youngster Niels Nkounkou. Kyle John got a lot of training time with the1st team but defensively didn’t look ready yet. Ryan Astley is behind Gibson and Branthwaite for a CB position and nobody else in his year is close.
In the year below the two 17 year olds Tyler Onyango and Lewis Dobbin offer the most chance, they are a long way from being 1st team ready but who knows they could do a Branthwaite after Christmas.

The reality is we’ve played this “ who’s next to step up” many times and in the past few seasons Gordon’s the only one we’ve collectively got right . Me, I just enjoy watching these u18/23 on their journey with no huge expectations of them , but they sure as hell beat watching the overpaid dross I’ve seen in the past 6 matches .

I saw them play once and must admit Onyango is a beast of a lad. They say he's 6ft 3 but I'd say taller, real imposing player from box to box. Hope he progresses well and gets his shot at first team footie.

Markelo to twente confirmed.
Pretty disappointing he or someone else wasn't given any opportunities towards end of the season to do something in our absolutely rotten midfield.
Doesn't say much for his prospects at Everton, likely go the Hornby route but suppose you never know for def.

I just see it as one less older player taking up minutes for the U23's.

He’s a pretty low risk purchase, bought cheaply when an unknown , at worst we should get a small fee for him . Sadly I can’t think of one foreign youngster who’s made it through with us , but we’ve got three more coming through at u18/23 ( Iversen, Nkounkou and Kristensen) so maybe one will make it.

This has been a massive issue at the club for years IMO. We seem to get talented lads at/upto 18, and then don't give them the chance to take the next step. Even with lads from abroad Mustafi and Dier both went on to be Internationals but neither could get anywhere near the first team here.

Too many older experienced pros taking up places on the bench, as part of a large first team squad. Everton could do well to reduce the squad numbers considerably, use the money to buy better players, and install a system whereas promising youngsters get more of a chance at making that big step as part of the first team squad.

I could well see Dowell doing well at Norwich and turning them a profit in a few years. Disappointed he never got a chance here, but wish him all the best in the future. Hopefully a team that will take a chance on him and develop him properly will get the best out of him, and hope he makes it back to the Premier League.
