Everton Youth Teams Thread

People on other threads are being totally unrealistic about Thierry Small suggesting he should be in the first team . The first glimpses I got of him was back in February when he came off the bench for the u18s , so he had a shortened last season , played regularly at U18 this season and got some minutes at U23s but is yet to start. Very little exposure really.
Undoubtedly he’s showing all the attacking traits of a modern full back , has the physical build and speed to match , scores goals as well as making cracking videos and there’s been more written about him in the past two months than any of our young players. But he’s 16 and still to be exposed to decent attackers running at him , let’s let him develop his defensive capabilities in the U23s first.

got to say I reckon Small is the single biggest talent in our youth set up right now between u18 and u23... even the Dobbins et al I’m still in a holding pattern .. but Small is definitely causing a stir !

Just from reading here and the odd video, seems that Onyango, Dobbin , Simms and Small are the main ones mentioned.
I'd say Onyango mate, but Small is very good.

Onyango hopefully would be coming through in a season or two to backup Allan and Doucoure.

Add in Gbamin and we'd have 4 players to rotate/compete with one another which would be ideal.

I imagine Small would need this + next season to be considered 'ready' for a squad place. Hopefully he turns out as good as Saka for Arsenal.

Genuine question, how big is Theirry?

Yeah, its a bit extreme isnt it?

The boy needs to cement a place in the u23s first really. Or at least have a few starts for them and show hes above that level.

What about Cannon.. his wonder goal deffo put him on the radar.

Agree with that around Small.. he has all the physical tools in the bag but really only looking at 22/23 before can consider a first team squad and likelihood is even then he would still only be 18/19. I know I'm often impatient to see game time but we will have to wait a couple years for a squad appearance I'm sure.. unless he is truly a phenom.

We mention these players but until theyve got first team games you never know...

Arsenal seem to be bringing through some good young players at the moment.

Bukayo Saka seems like he could go to the top and the rest of them are at least saving them money filling squad places.

I hope were able to do the same soon.

I read somewhere, cant even remember were it was, but it was dated about 3 weeks back that Cannon wont sign a new contract or turned one down, no idea obviously if True

It's all very fair mate. He has had some exposure to under 23's football. It is worth noting though, that the players who make the grade tend to skip through the age groups quite quickly.

I think he has been playing left wing for the 18's.

Thanks for that mate. This is a Mandela moment for me,as I'm almost certain I saw him sign a deal, and be pictured next to Marcel Brands signing it. How strange.

If he's not signing it would make some sense. I mean in these situations you never know if it's the club or the player refusing, or sometimes a bit of both. I'll be honest, it would surprise me if it's the player, as he plays a lot and has been involved with the 23's. I'm not sure they would push him forward in such a manner if they didn't think he would sign. In an Echo article they say;
"Cannon will head into his second-year scholarship looking to force his way into the plans of David Unsworth as well as earning a first professional contract. With a handful of other starlets already having signed senior terms, he is understood to be relaxed about his future and hopeful of securing a new deal with Everton." Thats from late May this year. It doesn't sound like a guy who desprately wants to leave or not sign.

Increasingly though lads will hedge their bets. Objectively I say good luck to them, but hopeful we don't lose players.

Yes definitely the case. And Small played in the 18's as an under 16. Onyango now plays for the reserves as an under 18. Gordon was quite similar. It's probably the best guide you have.

still 16 and playing in u23.. that is a proper indicator
So did Ledson though didn’t he..

2. plays for age appropriate national team - tick innit?
3. Makes first team squad while a teen - time on his side.

repeated those many times over the years and hasn’t let me down.. Small is on track.. so is Onyango
