Everton Youth Teams Thread

All of those games recently we've needed a goal I'd rather Broadhead brought on instead of king who is hopeless.
I also have wanted Broadhead to be given a few minutes in the first team, knows how to poach a goal, good movement, well worth a try.to not even get one minute on the pitch amazes me, why add him to the squad and put him on the bench game after game, Ancelotti gave two very young players a few minutes v Sheffield Wed, purely cosmetic, and nothing for this lad.

Nice to see the u18s stepping up so well to this level, maybe we ve been too cautious in the past with this “ it’s a big step up “ lark. Certainly Whitaker, Warrington, Price looked very comfortable tonight, Mallon too when he came on . Looks good for next season .

It cant be great for development either. Good to see the younger lads stepping up earlier as you say.

I'd rather we finish mid table every season with the younger players getting better quality football earlier in their career to see how they step up, than win the PL2 every year with a load of 23/24year olds who are obviously not going to make it here. Dont know why Unsworth was allowed to do that for years, good tl see Brands forcing the u18's through.

Francis Jeffers praised Everton Under-23s’ blend of rookies and senior players as the young Blues got the better of in-form Blackburn with a 2-1 Premier League 2 win in Southport.

A youthful Toffees side featured debutants Lewis Warrington and Charlie Whitaker, the latter marking his maiden appearance for David Unsworth’s team with a goal just before the half-hour mark when he produced a cool finish from Josh Bowler’s through ball to double the home side’s advantage.

Everton were already 1-0 up at that point thanks to yet another goal for striker Nathan Broadhead and, despite a Con Ouzounidis own goal giving second-placed Blackburn hope before the break, the hosts held on for an impressive victory to move to within three points of Spurs in third spot.

“With the young lads making their debuts, it was a decent performance,” said Under-23s coach Jeffers. “They wanted to win – which should be the case at any level when you play football for Everton – and all lads fought to put their bodies on the line at the end.

“Blackburn are a good team, what they do they do it well so, all in all, it’s a good win.

“I thought Charlie and Lewis making their debuts for the team was a real positive. Charlie got his goal and Lewis was everywhere again, like he was in the FA Youth Cup against Manchester City.

“Those lads have had a big week with that win in the cup and then making their debuts tonight. There’s another big game for them against Chelsea in the next round of the FA Youth Cup on Thursday but you want the big games.”

Jeffers lauded the qualities of 23-year-old Broadhead, who has trained with Carlo Ancelotti’s First Team throughout the season and been involved with the matchday squad.

The Wales Under-21 international put Everton ahead on 20 minutes with a sweet strike to further underline his talent. Meanwhile, Bowler, another experienced player in Unsworth’s Under-23s squad, caught the eye on his return from a hip injury.

“He did well for someone who has been out for so long,” added Jeffers. “Josh is a senior member of the group and I thought he was fantastic. He was an example to the younger lads and, like we knew, he’s a threat. When you get him the ball in those 1v1 situations, he can be a real handful.

“Nathan’s a top player at this level. He’s been with the First Team and he’s someone who I’ve always liked – a striker who scores all types of goals – and he’s someone who I’ve worked with for a few years. I hope he gets his chance in the First Team.”

They'll have no issues getting contracts at clubs in league 1, broadhead should get interest in the championship too
I don't think either will probably struggle to get into a L1 club now but before Jan when he was behind Simms and not scoring I think Broadhead was staring into the abyss a bit. Bowlers injury has scuppered him as well for getting a new team. Due to their ages they pretty much need to become immediate squad players at minimum and I'm not sure a championship team may risk it given COVID and everything.

Bowler and Broadhead don't really have much on their CVs for 22 and 23 respectively which would be my worry

Warrington is very much in that Walsh/Ledson/Carroll mould isn't he.

Reminds me of Walsh actually. I think he was playing as a "10" before and he was a bit in and out. Moved back to that 6 role, and to be honest has gone from strength to strength. Looks a very clever footballer and just runs the game.

Him, Price, Butterfield, Onyango and Whittaker (who is really more of a 10 and got a bit of Anthony Gordon about him) all have a chance. All a bit different, and Butterfield is probably at the back of that cue, but good to see them all getting game time for the 23's.

Not sure Broadhead or Bowler are anything more than League 1 starters/Championship squad players just playing a level clearly beneath them at this point. Hopefully their form, notably Broadheads wins them a contract at a club at the end of the season

I'm surprised nobody has had a look at Broadhead to be honest. Even a championship team as he looks well beyond the level he's at, and a natural 9. He looks a lot better than Simms did at that level too, and links the play better. He's been brilliant in that role and as has been said, is very clinical.

I think he's looked a completely different player since moving to striker from the wings and has really surprised me but that's only since Jan so no one could really look at him. Whilst I'm not sure he could instantly walk in and be a Championship 9, I now see him as a striker that could play at that level, prior to Jan I saw him as a Harry Charsley type League 1 or 2 winger. 9 goals in 8 games since the change in role for him is nothing to sniff at. Rooneys Derby are absolutely starved of goals so that could be a good fit but as I said above I think Championship teams may be put off by the small sample size and lack of pro experience for his age, I do think if he went into L1 he'd make his way up though.

I agree with that - I've been really impressed by him in the two games I've seen him play. Hope he has better luck in his career than Liam! (so far).
