Everton Youth Teams Thread

Good performances today from the regulars Tyrer, Bowler, Broadhead, John , Ouzounidis, Anderson . A very impressive performance from Jenson Metcalfe in the 6 position. Tall , thin , will fill out and gain strength but three or four really good long passes from the back to the forwards , great distribution from him. One to watch next season. Similarly Roman Quintyne coming on as sub at right back had an impressive debut . Not as well built as Small , no fancy tricks, just simple defending and a desire to use his pace to surge forward . We’ve certainly got next years u18 right back , it would be silly to predict too much at this stage but he looked as good as Small did this time last year.
Rafael Garcia was disappointing, it’s a tough gig playing that role at U23s level for the first time . He always looks busy , niggles defenders but his end product is below standard so far , too many runs into dead ends. Shame about Dobbin’s injury , we shouldn’t be pushing him back too early.

It's a fantastic achievement for a schoolboy to play for the 23's. Well done to Quintyne.

Next season I would like the u23s to line up a bit like this

Tyrer
Mallon Welch Anderson Small
Onyango Price Iversen
Garcia Cannon Dobbin

Leban Kristiensen Warrington McAllister Kouyate

Obviously Onyango and Iversen injured so that might give opportunities to Warrington and McAllister and its up to them to take them. Astley, John and Hughes would be sent out on loan. Butterfield and Whitaker I would have training with u23s but still playing in the u18s as I think not playing is likely to hinder their progress. Hunt and Quirk would be kept as they have a year left but I would say they have fallen down the order and Hagan would be also in the squad but I think he is also struggling with all the competition at CB.

U18s would look a bit like this

Stewart
Quintyne Tierney Campbell ?????
Butterfield Jagne Metcalfe
Mills Heath Whitaker

Not sure who is coming through at LB hence ????? the rest is based on whose played this season. Hopefully opportunities for some of them to play at u23s will arise but the key thing is lining up in a similar manner so step from one team to the other is seemless. As I said above Butterfield and Whitaker probably already good enough just there is lots of competition in them positions.
Daniel Lowey who came on is a LB according to our commentators

Yep , Lowey probably played the most games at left back last season, he took over the spot and kept out Jon Anderson , now departed. He’s not played as much this season as Small took over . In the last two years we have let better defenders go so it’ll be interesting to see the decisions we make at the end of the season . While I’d expect Small to re-sign , we would be vulnerable at left back in the U23s if we let the out of contract Lowey and Joe Anderson go and he doesn’t sign.
I guess we could also use the left sided centre back Eli Campbell at left back next season at U23s much as we did with Astley , and as he’d only be 17 next season it may be an option to have him cover Small.

Edit: sorry I misinterpreted this , I think the original post was looking at the LB gap at u18s , Lowey even if he stays will be too old next season.

You’d hope now the transfer ban is over we’ll start to plug gaps in the U23’s where necessary. Well, from the UK anyway.

Does anyone know how Derby Countys recruitment was styled under Perkins? I imagine we will continue where he left off there

Didn't realise Lowey was that old, in which case if Small renews he is probably gone. I would rather we didnt use Campbell there as he looks very promising as a centre half but it's all probably up in the air till Small makes a decision

Yeah Lowey too old for u18s next season. There will no doubt be a first year coming through. I agree I would rather they didn't use Campbell.

I didn't have a lot of time last night, but a few thoughts on some aspects of the game.

Firstly it's great to see 2 schoolboys involved. Jensen Metcalfe starting is particularly impressive and is someone I have spoken about for a while, as he was well regarded by both Everton and England.

In terms of barometers, playing for the 23's as an under 16 is a big one. In recent years I can only really think of Ledson, Kenny, Dowell and Astley who have done it over the last 10 years. All of them will have very decent careers in the game, even if none of them will be for Everton, although they may have brought Everton in around 10m quid in fees, so not bad at all.

I thought the little move he did in the lead up to the penalty was fantastic too. He takes the ball in a tough area, gets his head, and plays a brilliant pass through. It was a great moment. What you also see in the 2nd half, is a couple of times he loses it cheaply as he's not quite big enough yet. That will come though.

If you look in midfield, we have done very well recently. You have Metcalfe under 16 & Butterfield, Price, Onyango & Jagne (under 17s) when they made their debuts for the under 23's. We are clearly producing players in that area of the pitch. It's interesting that Metcalfe plays, I do wonder if Price and potentially Butterfield are now training with the 1st team squad?

It was also nice to see Jagne play. The thing I'd note, is he looks an enormous lad for his age. Very powerrfully built, but has probably needed a season to acclimatise to the urroundings, hopefully he does well going into the next season.

I think they rested price etc ahead of the fa youth Cup tie.
They also didn't appear in the training photos last week so have probably dropped back down with the injury crisis easing.

Just to add a bit to your comments without repeating, like you I was mainly interested in how the younger players performed. Roman Quintyne , at 16 looked like he has the makings of a decent right back , lots of speed going forward , good interplay on the right but able to defend too.

I’m less certain about Rafael Garcia as a starter after his 60 mins . Weve seen him mainly in little cameos, coming on for the last 20 mins , speedy, buzzing, harassing defenders causing problems, a live wire. But he seems to lack composure and a final ball. He hasn’t started many games and I thought that maybe after his long injuries we were easing him back, but I wonder if the coaches see him as a “ finisher” rather than a “starter”, someone who can come on for the last 20 minutes, run at a tiring defence , create a buzz.
As well as 3or 4 impressive through balls, Metcalfe’s ability to last the 90 mins was commendable , he paced himself really well. I wrote in my match comments about him being eased off the ball for their goal, heh ho, he’ll get stronger .

After that performance I’d be tempted to include Metcalfe in the starting lineup for the Youth Cup match , but 2 matches in four days may be a bit much for a schoolboy, so he’ll likely be on the bench with Garcia , with Welch and Price returning to replace Kristensen and Dobbin from the Chelsea match -unless he was taken off as a precaution I can’t see Dobbin starting unfortunately.
