Everton Youth Teams Thread

…it has. Really good tackling was about timing, Peter Reid was amongst the best at timing a tackle.

Its a shame tackling has virtually gone out of the game but it’s part of a strategy.

Another that you don't associate with tackling so much was Peter Beardsley. He could slide, take the ball, and stand back up in 1 motion with the ball at his feet, very rarely even touching the opponent. It was a skill I tried for years to replicate. As a result, I always enjoyed slide tackling and got quite good at it. It wasn't always about hurting the other team.

You're right about timing, and also body position (Joe would get really low) and would just play the ball cleanly. I was captain of my school team, so especially as you got older you would basically pick the team, so I was always on the lookout for players and what they did well. His timing and body position was fantastic, and there was an innate skill in it.

Nowadays you sense you either "nick" the ball or really just press the opponent into making a mistake. Thinking about it now though, the days of 50/50 channel balls, where it would bounce between players have gone, teams really want to protect the ball far more over territory.

Your negativity we play a centre back at right back in Godfrey????? Now - I have seen 16-year-olds in the past play for the blues supporting them since 1963 - watched the reserves the youth teams players came through - Big Nev was playing non league for Winsford etc we need to stop signing prim donas past it crocks on top wages - with Managers who are past it like the last one who has been sacked many times ......
Big names past it players mega money is not the answer, just look & compare the football Leeds play compared to our first team?

No big names there - just a shrewd manager ..... who trust his set-up .....
No big names at Leeds fair enough but i put it to you, how many of their starting line up are under the age of 20? I'd hazard a guess they have 1 or 2 who played more than 15 games at a push. Playing the youth all the time isn't the answer, they aren't good enough.

How do you know without giving them a run out from the bench? No, just load it up with crocks has beens & Two goalkeepers.... most of our youth players are sent out on loan to lower leagues to get lumps kicked out of them....my point is they do not get a chance ....
Even Tom Davies is a scapegoat for being dropped when playing well for the first team - plus he is not a defensive midfielder ......

…there’s always Ben Godfrey.

For a thread with “Youth” in its title I can’t help but smile at the number of posts from old farts, me included, hankering back to better times in the past. :D:D. At least we have the memories of our great teams and players of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s!

…ha, ha, i clearly remember Jimmy Husband in the 1965 FA Youth Cup team. I live around the corner from Bellefield so spent many years watching Lancashire League & Youth Cup games, my interest probably comes from that. I‘m nowhere near as close to things today but posters on this thread provide excellent insight.
