Everton Youth Teams Thread

Great to see Dobbin doing so well and seemingly being over his injuries. I know a lot has been made of Small, but Dobbin is every bit as good a prospect for me.

Also good to see Isaac Heath on the bench. As I mentioned here last year, one to watch.

….as we’ve said, Dobbin just looks a player. Bit of a quiet last season but the coaches will know what they’ve got.

Small is 18 months younger, which you have to factor in, and Dobbin was a lot smaller at 17 than Small but always looked a bit more natural a player to me.

Injury hit last season, but looks to be really innit this season, I think it's back to back Hatricks.

There were some eye brows raised when I said he was probably our biggest talent in the youth teams, ahead of even Small, but I'd stick with it.

Great to see Charlie Whitaker getting action with the first team yesterday. His attacking play and goals set him apart from the other youngsters last season, though for a time before Christmas he never seemed to hold down a starting spot with the likes of Warrington, Price, Butterfield often starting ahead of him but he’s really kicked on this year . And although we debate the mystical pathway the club are always seeking to provide there is now a stark difference in the set up compared to a few years ago when Gordon and Simms barely got U23s games in their 2nd year as Scholars let alone pre season first team action.

…good lad for sticking with him. I like to think I highlighted him some 18months ago as the one most likely but I have to admit to reconsidering last season. He’s uncomplicated and effective, just as I like.

Sorry it wasnt meant to be a brag at all, just stating what a good prospect Dobbin in. He ticked a lot of boxes for me though Dobbin when you 1st saw him playing up, in a key number 10 position (at a time when that was less frequent than now).

When I saw him again back end of last season, he had grown enormously in that time. Previously hed always been a clever, quite quick, intelligent, "natural" footballer who probably lacked a bit of power and pace. He came back with the build of Courtney Duffus or James Vaughan, but we know hes a cleverer player than them.

It's funny with players isnt it? How sometimes a years growth, often when they get injured and finally let the body rest a bit can make such a big difference.

He cant do any more than hes doing currently. Hes far too good for the 23s and youd imagine it's only a matter of time until he goes into the 1st team squad, then it's up to him to impress.

Just to be a contrarian though, what's really interesting is Charlie Whittaker, at 17, stayed with the 1st team squad over Dobbin. So theres obviously something in there the management like. Hes got a great spring and a knack for scoring goals. I still think he lacks a yard of pace, but at 17 that could still come.

The biggest piece of advice you would give to any younger player is to keep yourself in the eye line of the 1st team manager. He is doing that.

Is there no one who could act as 4th or 5th choice wide player for the 1st team?

It seems as if we want to go with Richarlison, Townsend + a new signing -- Gordon perhaps going on loan which is why the Gray deal seems to be taking shape.

Im dismayed there seems to be no one we could have to step up rather than sign Gray

Surely Thierry Small should have been offered that role...

It seems like Small wants to leave.

It seems like Small wants to leave.

Clearly hes not getting games ahead of Digne...and likely Nkounkou (who seems decent with potential).

However, if he was moved further forwards (as many have suggested) and could be a rotation option with Richarlison, Townsend and a new wide player then perhaps he'd see that as an incentive to stay.

If hes been told were signing Demarai Gray and hes ahead of him then no wonder he wants to go.

Alternatively, he has no interest in that or staying at the club because he has been advised (potentially very poorly) to leave.

The lad wants to go, this has been going on for a long time, and the fact he didn't report back should tell you everything you need to know. He isn't hungry to play for our club, so put a pin in it and move on.
