Everton Youth Teams Thread

Played and kept a clean sheet in a 5-0 win

An interesting loan , presumably they had a gap to fill short term, it’ll be good experience for him. I was surprised that newcomer Patrick Nash has been selected ahead of Stewart recently , Nash looked about 3 or4 ins smaller than Stewart in a warm up . I can’t say I’ve seen enough of both to comment more, it’s just interesting Nash has been selected ahead of him , he did ok in the Youth Cup game though.

I've only watched him in that youth cup game so take with a pinch of salt of course but I thought Nash's comfort on the ball and distribution was light years ahead of what you usually see in goalkeepers at this level, so I'd guess this is why he's being picked despite his smaller frame. I'm actually looking forward to watching him again in the next cup game.

Everton Under-18s full-back Roman Dixon has signed his first professional contract until the end of June 2024.

The 17-year-old defender has been with the Club’s Academy since Under-12 level and spoke of his pride at being able to continue his progress with the Blues.

“It feels good to sign my first professional contract,” Dixon told evertonfc.com.

“It’s a very good accomplishment and it shows my hard work to date has paid off.

“This is a proud moment in my career so far and hopefully I can kick on from this.

“It’s a very special moment for me and my family. They’ve made a sacrifice by taking me up to training every week, coming along to watch me in games. I’m incredibly grateful for everything they do for me.”

A quick and powerful full-back, Dixon credited the coaches he has worked with since joining Everton for developing his game.

Confident on the ball as well as in attack, the teenager feels his game has improved massively during his time with the Club.

“I have developed a lot since I joined Everton Academy,” Dixon added.

“The player I was then compared to now is completely different.

“I feel like I have been encouraged in certain areas to exploit different techniques that I have and some that I didn’t know I have.

“Now I use it to my advantage in games. My pace, speed, running with the ball - Everton’s coaches have unlocked that for me and I have been able to use it as one of my strengths in training as well as games.

“I think the attacking side is one of my strengths to my game.

“With my speed, it can help me out a lot to get up the pitch but also to track back.

“It’s an area I’m comfortable in, but also I can still do more to improve.”

Dixon’s game-time has been limited this season after surgery on an ankle ligament injury.

Now back to full fitness, he hopes his patience will have paid off and credited Under-18s manager Paul Tait for supporting him through his rehabilitation.

“I’ve had to be really patient,” added Dixon.

“I think now it’s getting the memory of my injury out of my head and looking forward to my football.

“Paul was very good with me when I was out injured.

“He always asked how long until I was back, encouraged me and came to check on me in the gym during my sessions.

“Even though I wasn’t playing, I never felt out of the squad.

“He always tried to fit me in where he could and I’m really grateful for that.

“As a coach, he’s very disciplined and just wants the best out of you.

“He makes you want to work hard and if you don’t, he makes you know about it.

“That said, he’s very encouraging and has been great to work with.”

Looking forward to seeing how this lad develops at RB as well as Ishe Samuels -Smith at LB, hopefully both will push on to the U23’s next season. We currently have no proper LB at that level and Kyle John at RB is likely to go out on loan or move on permanently, so definitely an opportunity there for them both to play above their age groups.

Dixon made his u23 debut last season as a Schoolboy , I don’t think he started , can’t remember, in the limited bits I’ve seen him he’s certainly got pace and power - there was a goal he laid on for Emilio Lawrence in an u18 game last season when after exchanging passes he went from his own box to the opposing goal line to then lay the ball back. If he’s back to full fitness I’d play him at U23s this season, along with Jensen Metcalfe. The model that was in place when Brands was here of playing the most promising players up early needs to continue.

As an aside, it’s also nice to see our most promising youngsters signing up/ being signed up as soon they can and not being worried about who’s ahead of him e.g. Patterson.

Everton u23s are back in Premier League cup action tomorrow night away at Sheff utd, and Sheff Utd has just said they are showing the game LIVE on their YouTube channel, Kick off is 7pm

Mohammed-Ali Cho, was with us from when he was 11 until he left in 2020 now signed for Dortmund for 20 million.

Add this to Small and you have to ask wtf the academy is playing at.

He left for first team footie - same as Small. No issues with the academy on this one. It's up to the first team to give them what they want.

If he is good enough to be getting picked up for 20 million at 17 surely there must have been enough about him to give him a pathway into the team especially considering how desperate for wingers we were.

It is the same short-sightedness at play as we saw with Small.

Yeh but that's got nothing to do with the academy. These lads want to play for someone's first team so it's down to Ancelotti/Benitez (Small) and whoever before that to use them.

If he was still here now he'd be playing in the U23's and that's not Unsworth's fault that's the first team manager's fault.
