Everton Youth Teams Thread

Are we still waiting on him signing that contract or something? Better than Small??
ISS isn’t 17 until next June when he can sign a pro contract . It’s highly likely that his current Scholarship contract contained a guarantee of a Pro contract , so the question is whether he takes up that option at 17 or goes elsewhere on a pro contract as Small did.

hes too young to sign a pro deal but signed his scholarship this summer when all the talk was he was leaving with lawrence.
still a chance he could leave at later date but hopefully the changes are enough to keep him.
hes a better defender than small was.
Yeah that was it… I know there was loads of talk him going so at least committed (for now)

Everton midfielder Tyler Onyango has signed a new contract with the Club until the end of June 2025, and completed a season-long loan to League One club Burton Albion.

Onyango, 19, joined Everton Academy aged eight and was 17 when he made his senior debut, as a substitute in an FA Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021.

The teenager played three times off the bench in the Premier League last season after overcoming a long-term ankle injury.

Burton, managed by former Leeds United and Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, begin their campaign at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Everton Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, said: “We are delighted to agree a new contract with Tyler.

“He has made impressive progress through our Academy, recognised with experience playing for our First Team, and we are looking forward to him continuing his development on loan with Burton this season.”

Seems from Frank's interviews that we're much more big on loans than we used to be. Happy with that.

Lampard’s statements on how he viewed loans versus training with the first team/ playing u23s were very encouraging, together with Thelwell’s direction we might just be getting it right at last. It’s encouraging for Onyango too, a clear direction for next season, future secured for a few years . Let’s hope he has a bit more luck with injuries when on loan than the likes of Benigime had.

Yeh there's always the big "will they play enough" discussion but I think even playing a handful of men's games serves them better than the absolute pointlessness that is uncompetitive U21 football.

….the reality, though, is that we have a very poor squad so if any of these kids were the real deal then Lampard would be keen to use them.

Chelsea send quality players on loan because they can’t break into a very strong team. Our youngsters lack quality, I don’t think it’s a good sign when they are sent out.

Not saying they don't lack quality but also players get better with experience and that's just the basics of football. We've seen Gordon improve, playing against better oppo, last season. These lads will go out, play better oppo, and hopefully get better.

Just because someone at 18 can't get into the Everton team doesn't mean they won't at 20 after a couple of loans. Countless examples of this. Imagine if Spurs sold Kane when he was 18 because he couldn't break into the Spurs squad then?

Well I know you’ve used this argument before mate , that the manager can’t rate them if he sends them on loan, but Lampard’s thinking is certainly sound on paper . Onyango and Dobbin are 19 , and no they won’t be regular starters in our first team this season , so an appropriate loan would be a good option. The nice thing is we’re getting them through early , Warrington too, if we’re able to say at 19 they’ve had good experience at u21 and are now ready for mens football it beats where we were a few years ago when 19 was often the start of their u23s career.
