Everton Youth Teams Thread

Hunt is versatile , can cover left back and left midfield which makes him good for the bench, I don’t think it’s a question of trust, more that you don’t bring him on to win the game or change things, Dobbin and Chermiti are more likely to do that.
Today was the perfect illustration with the lack of trust for me. Once again 2 keepers on the bench for a home game despite gaping midfield depth issues.

Now, I could be massively wrong here and Lonergan might actually be a better central midfielder than Metcalfe but I doubt it. If Onana or Garner got hurt today Dyche would've thrown a senior player who's never played it midfield in there over Hunt and obviously Metcalfe. Dobbin played in the Doucoure role well but isn't trusted to start and do it and instead it's yet more square pegs and round holes with DCL and Beto together.

I'm under no illusions about the ability or lack thereof of our youth players but we don't know what we have unless we give them a chance and they'd at least be up for it

Most managers are like that though aren't they so you'd assume theres a reason for it its definitely more common for a manager to play a senior player out of position than to give a random kid a debut and by a big margin too. I'm not saying I agree with it like but its 100% the more normal thing to happen.

Depends on the club and how good the coaches are I'd say. It definitely trends towards the better teams trust youth more. Off the top of my head Liverpool, Newcastle, City, United, Brighton all thrown teenagers in the deep end this season.

Lpool threw two in yesterday and played well, just give them a go .

So the teams with the better young players then? Newcastle have done it with one lad who they think is absolutely amazing up there but other than that they picked the same team like 15 times in a row even though the manager kept saying how tired they were and used people like Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummet instead of using kids. and like I said that the norm for most teams If we had a good youth team with players knocking on the door and we weren't picking them i'd be annoyed but we haven't anyone who was even slightly highly rated has moved on over the last year or two its not actually hard to believe that McNeil or Harrison would actually be better central midfielders than someone who will go on to play in League 2 at their peak.

Often though it’s down to opportunities, all the clubs you list have been playing in Europe this season , more games , more opportunities. I remember when we played about 6 u23s in a dead European game , most were on a par with todays u21s and eventually disappeared to the lower leagues. It’s also easier to put a teenager into a team brimming with confidence and playing well. Hopefully we can get back to a situation that allows these things to happen.

Another thing to add to the argument is, it may sound mad, but its probably easier, especially for an attack minded player, to slot into a better team than a team like ourselves.

I look at the reds who started to bring Curtis Jones & Harvey Elliott into the midfield 3 about 2 years ago. At the time they had the likes of Fabinho & Henderson (before there legs went) to play along side in that midfield. They lose the ball, those 2 are there to back them up, they have more options on the ball because of the better quality of player around you!

With Branthwaite being the exception (although one could argue he is slotting in, in a secure part of our side along side Tarkowski & Mykolenko with Pickford behind him! WE are a defensive team who play to his strengths..............plus he's a very good player in his own right!
You saw it with mainly Antony Gordon........chasing loose balls, every attack is vital because we don't get to many, so you are a bit more tentative on trying something etc, players not spotting your runs!

I’ve still got this game recorded on my TV. Quite enjoy watching it every now and again lol

Its not mad at all it makes total sense if you put a kid into a team surrounded by 10 quality players who can carry him if they need to its a lot easier than putting them into a team where they have to be at least at the same level as everyone else and maybe even one of the better players expected to make a difference.

You need to be exceptional, especially in midfield to play in the Premier League at a young age! Not just good at football, but big, strong and physical!
I'm looking at previous England under 21 squads....Oliver Skipp, Tom Davies, Hamza Choudhary, Nathaniel Chalobah were the 'muscle' in centre mid for the previous 4 tournaments!
Declan Rice (youth centre back) & Jude Bellingham (once in a generation) are the obvious exceptions
