Everton Youth Teams Thread

It sounds like Harry Charsley had a good game in Ireland's u21 0-0 draw with Norway.

"Everton midfielder Harry Charsley was a real positive for the home side with his bright attacking play and work off the ball. He had the game's first attempt on goal in the eighth minute but his snap-shot flew narrowly over.

Charsley showed his class again in the 34th minute when he produced a brilliant turn in the box and his strike drew a save from visiting keeper Per Kristian Bråtveit."

He's not long turned 19 so is playing up two age groups as he could play for their U19s. A player who has scooped awards at u18 level but someone who doesn't get much attention here, just foes the business under the radar, good on him for that game for Zireland.

Random musing but started a new FIFA career mode with Everton last night and Harry Charsley is in the squad but I can't remember him ever being a part of the first team matchday squad or even with the U21's which is by an large how you end up in the team's FIFA squad. Anyone know anything about his season so far? I'd never heard of him I don't think.

I don't think he's ever been part of the first team squad mate, but he's certainly been part of the U21s this season . I know he came off the subs bench in the first 3 or 4 games , and I recall him starting and scoring the second goal away to Southanpton last month, (Kenny burst forward into box , pulled the ball back , Charsley side footed in from about 12 yds.)
That was the game on their YouTube.
I'm not sure if he's started in u21 games since then.

Oh yeh he did, forgot about that, was watching the Saints game myself. Just baffled me when he was on the game that's all. They added Ledson, Holgate, Henen & Charsley but removed Walsh & Dowell because they haven't been near the first team squad of late.

dowell's been on the bench this season?

Earlier in the year Roberto made a comment about why they hadn't gone for Cleverly loan in tha Jan transfer window and he said something like " we've got three young midfielders coming through , Ledson, Dowell and Walsh" . Ledson and Dowell have featured in Euro/ pre season games , but none have featured in a PL squad. I accept that with Ledson and Dowell there were good reasons for this, but as all three improve their game week on week there must be a strong case for one travelling with the 1st team squad. The more I see of Walsh the more I like him. Forget his size the guy is tenacious and highly mobile. His goal against Stoke deserved wider praise than it got, maybe because it wasn't the winner. When the ball started bobbing about the penalty area he was about 10 yards outside the area, sprinted in , got to the ball before about six Stoke defenders who were closer and slid a shot through a packed defence. A superb individual goal. Oh for the OS to take these TV clips seriously and provide a decent commentary to them.

Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees.

We are a bit that way at the moment. We have four or five youngsters who could possibly do a decent job in the first team as we saw Galloway doing this season and last. It does appear that Dowell, Ledson, Walsh, Holgate and maybe one or two more could play a part but there so many it is hard to pick which one.

Usually, there is only one who is standing out in the academy and forcing the managers hand.

Of course we also have a squad which has steadily being strengthened and there is more competition and fewer places available for youngsters to get a run.
Last summer alone we added Lennon,Cleverley,Deulofeu, Funes Mori and Holgate.

Everton have agreed a deal for 17-year-old Matty Foulds, with the Bury defender set to move to Goodison Park for an undisclosed fee in January.

A left-footed centre-half, Foulds came through the ranks at Gigg Lane, before signing a professional contract in February.

He has made two senior appearances during the 2015/16 campaign, having earned his debut as a second-half substitute in the Shakers’ 4-1 Capital One Cup defeat to Leicester City back in August.

Foulds then played the full 90 minutes as Bury defeated Accrington Stanley in the Football League Trophy in September

How do you mean see the wood for the trees mate?

Catcher.
I mean that there are so many quality youngsters all at a high level that no one really stands out as the next youngster to break into the first team.
Take Ledson as an example. He looks as if he could fit into the first team today and previously he would be the stand out player in the academy that everybody knew he would be a first team player.
But Ledson has to fight for attention with Dowell, Henen, Holgate and others and I think it becomes more difficult to really make a mark, the stronger first team squad also raises the bar for these young lads.

I see this as a good thing though. If the youth team are being trained to play as the first team are, then the progression should be smoother with each player knowing their role. As we hopefully get stronger in the 1st team it will aid the academy too, especially if we continue to show belief in our young players. Hopefully some positive times ahead.

I'd advise anyone doing nothing at midday on Sunday to get down to GP and see a lot of the lads talked about on this thread play. The U21s play Porto (I think it's them anyway). Invariably it's good entertainment.
