Everton Youth Teams Thread

I'm with you on this. While there's nothing like watching us put 6 past a team for lifting your mood, I really enjoy the few snippets of our youngsters I get to see on TV. I'm not English but I'd happily watch Connolly and Kenny playing for EnglandU19s, while less interested in say Ross/Stones playing at full level. The Youth set up for me is an interesting sub set of being an Evertonian which I really enjoy. I just wish the OS were a bit more proactive in this area. I'm not expecting Manu/ Chelsea TV type stuff but I know from searching for info on games that other clubs do their Youth teams far better than we do.

and they just ignore you when you point this out to them on twitter. they really are useless.
a good youth set up is the only hope we have of challenging again which is why i like to take an interest.

We are all interested in the academy but I do agree with the attitude the club takes (as most clubs do) giving out relatively little information about the younger players.

These youngsters walk a very fine line at this stage in their lives.
They will all have been the best at what they do up to now, the best in their street/team/school. They will always have been the elite.
They are now competing only with other elite and some may be beginning to struggle and fall by the wayside(in terms of becoming a premiership footballer)
Others are blossoming and it is an equally difficult challenge to keep their feet on the ground.

I think the club manage these lads carefully until they feel they are emotionally ready for the spotlight. Part of this management is keeping it relatively low key at under age level as they prepare all the different kinds of characters for what is ahead of them.

i dont want info about the players, i mean updates during games or showing the games live.

Well you just had to see the commitment Saints put to streaming the game against us live on YouTube to show the deficiencies in the way our club gives coverage to the youth teams. Are they maybe doing it to decrease the visibility on our up-and-coming stars? Who knows. The least they could do is cover some matches, even if it's just commentary, for EvertonTV subscribers.

.....I don't think the club has a strategy to discourage interest, I just think they don't recognise the genuine thirst supporters have for information. The OS would be better off not providing updates at all than the paltry efforts they employ giving 'live text updates'.

Least we have enough people on this thread interested/informed enough to make this possibly the most relevant place for youth team coverage. The OS should just link this thread to fans.

Interview with Dowell on the OS http://www.evertonfc.com/news/2015/11/17/delighted-dowell-targeting-game-time

Delighted Dowell Targeting Game Time

Kieran Dowell is delighted to be over the injury that has kept him sidelined for three months – and is targeting as much playing time as he can.

The Everton youngster marked his comeback from ankle ligament damage by netting a fine curling strike in the Under-18s’ 4-3 victory over Stoke City on Saturday.

While no injury is welcome for a professional footballer, this setback was particularly disruptive for Dowell, who had been training with the first team at the time it happened.

“It’s really good to be back,” he told evertontv. “This is the longest injury I have ever had – three months. I have only ever been out for a month before. So it was all new for me but I am delighted to be back.

“I was training with the first team and I went for a ball. Unfortunately I have gone to ground and snapped the ligament, which meant I had to have an operation. It was a bit of a nightmare really!

“My target now is to get fully fit as quickly as I can and then get as many games as I can. I need to catch up all my minutes in training and we’ll see what happens. I want to keep plugging away at having opportunities to train with the first team.”

By his own admission, Dowell has had to adjust to such a lengthy spell out, but thankfully there are those at Finch Farm who have experienced similar misfortune.

Leighton Baines is one such example. “Plenty of us now have been through injuries,” added Dowell. “Bainesy has had the same injury that I had.

“I was with Leighton almost every day so you do get to know each other – and sick of each other in the end!

“It was great to be able to talk to him every day and learn from him. He gave me some really good advice. He just told me to use my time wisely and turn everything into a positive, which is what I have tried to do.”

We really do seem to have an impressive level of integration between the age groups. Definite family team.

I saw Cleverley say this the other day, that he, Baines and Dowell all rehabilitated together. It was interesting to see really and gives an indication of just how highly thought of Dowell is. That he was recovering alongside two first team players and Cleverley is well aware of him. He's not seen as "some kid in the under 18's".

....and good pro's not only know they have a responsibility to mentor younger players, they enjoy doing so. I think we generally have a group of good pro's and if that is the case those who follow will be of a similar ilk.

Yes Cleverley has been at Manchester United who until recently were the example of this. Baines is also now a senior player. I think it is telling though that they recognise him as a talent worthy of doing recovery with them. Without being harsh, most under 18's would not be doing rehabilitation with first team players. Nor would they being talked about by them.

The fact that there is so much discussion/debate regarding who will wear the armband while Jagielka is out is a statement to the character of players at the club; hopefully this is something the younger players can learn directly. What a culture that would be, to groom leaders from the academy.

....evident in the fact that Ledson, Kenny and Davies are among those who have already captained their country.
