Everton Youth Teams Thread

I don't think anyone will sit here and pretend Armstrong should be starting but giving him 2 minutes at the end of already decided games has virtually no value whatsoever. The step up is massive but as Big Red have shown time and time again you can get away with giving these youngsters meaningful minutes without too much of a drastic drop off over the short term.
I don't think that is the case.

Being part of the match day squad is huge for a young lad. Learning how experienced professionals prepare for the game, deal with the build up and then deal with a win or a loss. Getting him on the pitch even for a couple of minutes removes the pressure of a premiership debut which is a landmark in any career.

I think he has been handled well, I think throwing him into the midfield of a struggling team could be difficult for a seventeen year old.
Giving him brief cameos exposes him to what life as a premiership footballer is about without any real pressure to perform.

I was of this opinion until the wolves game. That's when I realised if he wasn't using him then he never will. He will probably never have an easier in game scenario to get him PL minutes than that.

….i like comparing young players to professionals just to establish what ‘type’ of player they are. It’s not suggesting a youngster will emulate that player, but it’s just thought process.

I find it a little difficult with Armstrong as he seems more classy than physical. Decent size, picks a pass and makes runs into the box to get on the end of things. My mind was drawn to a Sigurdsson ‘type’ although I’d say Armstrong looks to have a bit of pace (as per his run into the box before the nice flick for his first assist).

He should watch a few Phillipe Albert vids. former Newcastle and Belgium player.

Armstrong’s range of passing is quite extensive, not only as shown in the 7-0 win but I was thinking about a fabulous pass he made in the 87th minute when he came off the bench when England u18 beat Ukraine 3-1 . This was back in October , this is the shortest video I could find , ignore Ukrainian commentary and go to 5 mins . It’s Armstrong who makes the cross for the goal.

The first thing that struck me was that he moved like a young Steven Gerrard.

Look at the extensive experience Dyche has given to...

Harrison Armstrong

Roman Dixon

I'm intrigued by your pointing to Armstrong not "being able to make an impression in appearances". What kind of impression would you expect him to have made in those extremely limited minutes?

There is absolutely and categorically no evidence, as in zero to suggest Dyche can manage young players. Nothing to suggest he can coach them either.

Of one thing I can be certain and that is the two others you mention in Clarke and Graham would benefit from a different manager to Sean Dyche if they are to have a hope of making the impact which the signs are pointing towards.

He's done his upmost NOT to use young players unless there is no alternative.
Also don’t want to turn this into a Dyche thread but McNeil established himself as a first team player under Dyche as a 19 year old, and while opinions may vary he’s definitely developed into a premier quality player. Nathan Collins also became a 1st teamer at 20.
Not a lot of evidence at Everton, but he does have some credentials when it comes to nurturing young players

…I might be wrong but didn’t he start in the League Cup? As always with cameo appearances, I look for a ‘that’ll do me’ moment. Just one little thing that makes me think we have a player here.

Regardless, chuffed he was outstanding last night and I’m sure it won’t be long before he struts his stuff at top level.

For sure, it definitely looks promising for him though from what I can see he looks to be more of a classy player than perhaps someone you'd associate with a Dyche midfielder.

I think the disappointing thing was that he wasnt given more time at Wolves. Also clearly with his vision and technique they could have added something we were lacking vs 10 man Brentford.

Not saying hes going to run games or should start every week -- just that he should have been given a decent chance to impact the Brentford & Wolves games.

I'm interested to see if he comes through as a deep or attacking playmaker. Someone like Sarri for example may see value in him sitting deep like a Jorginho type.

Could be great timing for him depending on who the new manager is.

Do you see him as more a 10 or a 6 ?

You could argue that those players were used as last resorts as weve seen with our younger players.

Burnley had limited money to spend in the market -- weve seen anyone and everyone used ahead of our u21 players (including Branthwaite).

“ Do you see him as more a 10 or a 6 ?“ Well he’s still 17 so time to develop different roles, but he was an obviously successful 10 the other night and also played in a forward role when he came on for England. Putting aside any discussion about first team minutes , I do have a concern that as a result of his training with the first team , although making good progress and getting good experience ,he’s actually getting limited competitive game exposure to develop in different roles.

Hopefully they stick to a position and focus with that.

Maybe in the end he was limited, but Tom Davies was continuously moved around; further back, box to box and a 10, and I think this harmed his development as he looked very good at 17. A different manager every year and a lot of pressure put on him didn’t help either.

Hopefully that will all be different with the new owners and Armstrong will be coming through at a good time.
