This. He is going to a competitive League Two side, which is about the right level when you consider the how well, or not, most U21 sides do in the Papa Johns Trophy.

The gulf between the U21s and First Team is massive. You have to trust the coaches who work with these players on a day-to-day basis as to who they think can make it. Armstrong, for example, was not really on the radar but seems to have developed quickly enough to have been promoted at 17, whereas Whittaker is 21, so plenty of time to have been considered if he was good enough.

The academy coaches I know at Ipswich tell me that the very few they consider are not only the standout player in their age group (ability, physicality and mentality), but also have to be exceptional in at least one area akin to the level of players in and around the first team.
