Everton Youth Teams Thread

http://www.[Publication is blacklis...-morgan-feeneys-performance-was-applauded-by/

David Unsworth says Morgan Feeney's performance was applauded by his Everton teammates

Morgan Feeney made his debut for Everton's under-21 side in their latest display against Widnes.

David Unsworth has told Everton’s official website that the club’s youngsters all applauded Morgan Feeney after his performance for the Toffees’ under 21 side against Widnes.

Feeney was handed his under-21 debut in the contest by Unsworth, and the youngster put in a wonderful display.

Feeney, who is still only 16-years-old, started the fixture in the heart of their defence – and he put in a commanding performance, as Everton picked up a resounding 8-0 victory.

“Morgan has been terrific since he came in in the summer as a first year scholar,” Unsworth says. “He has got better and better with the Under-18s team as the season has gone on and it was nice to give him his Under-21 debut tonight.

“The lads gave him a round of applause at the end which was lovely because he is a smashing kid and we have high hopes for him."

Feeney is yet to make a first team appearance for Everton, which is hardly a surprise given his tender years.

There are still high hopes for his future at Goodison Park, though, and he has been identified as a player who could become a regular for the Toffees in the years to come.

Everton have a number of exciting youngsters currently breaking through, and their defensive prospects look strong.

Everton already have John Stones playing a vital role in their first team, while Mason Holgate and Brendan Galloway will hope to become regulars in the years ahead.

Feeney, too, will be aiming to follow in his teammates’ footsteps, and the ease with which he stepped up to under-21 level should stand him in good stead.

Matty Foulds, who will sign for Everton in January
Matty Foulds is already training with Everton ahead of his January move to the Blues.

The 17-year-old will officially complete his £225,000 transfer from League One side Bury when the window opens next month.

But Foulds is working with the Blues now.

Bury boss David Flitcroft said there were a number of clubs interested in the left-footed defender but Roberto Martinez and Everton led the chase.

“It has been difficult because there are quite a few clubs interested,” Flitcroft told the Bury Times.

“Everton really sort of drove the bidding war and wanted him.

“Once the player knows and understands that a club like Everton and particularly Roberto (Martinez) wants him, once he spoke to Roberto about his pathway and his development there was no holding him back and it’s a fantastic deal for the club. It’s a good deal all round and I’m delighted for the kid.

“He has trained with the first team ever since I have been here really.

“I have spoke to him since and he has gone in at Everton and he is quite enjoying it.

“The club has acted very well in protecting the interests of Matty Foulds and I’m really plotting his career and rooting for the kid because he could be a fantastic player.”

Everton are understood to be paying £225,000 up front with the deal for Foulds including a number of add-ons.

“It is undisclosed,” Flitcroft said of the four-year-deal the teenager has signed.

“There is money up front.

“A good sizeable money up front and add-ons and depending on how he does and how he plays the game.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has high hopes for Foulds

“I think in the early stages people didn’t [put clauses in contracts] but now you know there are a lot of caveats in there to meet all eventualities.

“It is too complicated to go into but you do look at those things and make sure that you get everything boxed off.

“You just don’t know what will happen, so it’s very important that you get everything nailed.

“We took our time with it and we didn’t panic, we made sure we got it right for the club and that’s why it took so long.”

We'll be fantastic should football fashions ever dictate we play with 7 centre backs. I can't remember a time when we had so many promising young defenders on the books. Even if many of them fail to make the grade we look certain to have some good players for the first team.

...Morgan Feeney.

Apparently Roberto was furious when he first saw our 2015 Scholars, particularly Morgan Feeney , Jack Kiersey and Shayne Lavery. Something he said had obviously been misunderstood/lost in his translation. : " No I said go out and build me a Golden Generation , not a "Ginger Generation"

But it looks like its working out for those three youngsters so far, shame Liam Walsh is not of a similar hair colour , we could have been talking about "the next Alan Ball".

LOL .. exactly what I was thinking reading through the thread. The youngsters really excite me .. and not in a 70's TV personality way.

Perceptions like this should really aid our recruiting, realistically for any kid the odds are against them being a premier league regular but we offer both a club with a clear pathway to the first team and a manager that will play them.

He is gonna be the new Osman, still hanging around the first team in 10 years time.

I hope not, time to cut those apron strings .. when I've watched him in the U21's he strutted around like he was too good to be there, bare minimum effort. It's difficult enough to make the step up to the 1st team, to compound it with (apparent) apathy is daft.

Interesting signing Foulds. I suppose it could be also because Galloway is now considered first team quality and we need someone to come into the u21s and replace him.

In a couple of seasons when Jags retires we could have;

LCB -- Mori / Galloway / Foulds
RCB -- Stones / Holgate / Browning

Hopefully these young players can develop into top quality so we have alot of options there and could actually sell two of them to cover the £15mil+ combined cost of them all :)

Recently Roberto put it into context by saying something like he was happy with the attacking options and midfield options we have in our youngsters , but they were less happy with defenders and identified a need for a left sided CH in this age group. Then of course Morgan Feeney steps up to the plate....
It's an impressive piece of scouting in that Foulds has barely featured for Bury, unlike Stones, Galloway, Holgate,in their respective teams, and no international call ups that would have marked him out. Very early days yet, but somebody must have seen something we can develop.

He's the sort of player we can take a punt on based on just a few viewings because he was seemingly pretty cheap. I mean there was a 'bidding war' over him and we still got him for about £250k.

Here's another one, the Echo must have been interviewing our U21s or something. See Bobby's been convincing people to join again

Revealed: Why Mason Holgate picked Everton over Premier League rivals

Mason Holgate chose to sign for Everton over other Premier League clubs - but only after an eleventh hour phone call from Roberto Martinez.

The 19-year-old joined the Blues from League One side Barnsley in August in a deal worth an initial £500,000.

Holgate put pen to paper on a five-year-deal and rejected the advances top flight clubs, including Bournemouth, to sign for Everton.

And the young defender was headed to the south coast club for a medical when a last-ditch Martinez call convinced him to join the Blues.

Holgate was impressed with the manager’s attention to detail and is hoping to follow in the footsteps of John Stones, who also came through the ranks at Barnsley, and Brendan Galloway who swapped League One for Everton in 2014.

“After speaking to the gaffer and seeing Stonesy and Brendan, there wasn’t really a decision to make,” Holgate told the ECHO.

“As soon as you speak to him, you just know.

Roberto Martinez has the gift of the gab

“I spoke to a few managers and they all sounded good but as soon as I spoke to the gaffer here I just knew I had to come to Everton.

“I’m only young but it felt like some of the managers didn’t know a lot about me, they were asking what my position was but Roberto rang me and he knew everything.”

“It just happened really fast,” he added.

“I was on my way to Bournemouth and it was then that I first heard about Everton’s interest.

“But he rang me as I was going down and so I turned the car around.

“We were by Birmingham on the motorway and just turned around.”

Holgate is a regular with Everton’s under-21s this season but has also named in the matchday squad for three of the first-team’s games.

“I’ve trained most days with the first-team,” Holgate revealed.

“There’s a lot more detail in the training as you step and the it’s a faster pace.

“But it’s good, it’s just getting used to it - there was a lot of running around at first!

“I’ve settled in now and I’m getting used to it.”

“I’d been at Barnsley since I was seven and so it was all I’d known so it was weird not playing for Barnsley anymore,” he added.

“It was a big decision but I felt like it was the right time.

“It’s not just moving team, it’s moving out of my house with mum and dad and living by myself but most people my age go to uni, so it’s the same as that.

“It was hard early on but it’s not that far away so I get home quite a lot.”

Doncaster-born Holgate made his Everton u-21s’ debut in August’s opening mini-derby of the season.

After giving away a 12th minute penalty, the Blues newboy found his feet to produce a man-of-the-match display as David Unsworth’s men recovered from 3-0 down to draw 3-3.

Everton travel to St Helens’ Langtree Park on Sunday (2pm) for the return game with the Reds’ second string.

“It’s a big first game,” he said.

“I didn’t feel that nervous but I was looking forward to it and you can tell what it means to everybody and all the staff.

“It was a bad start with the penalty but everyone got back together and we played well.

“We went 3-0 down, got it back to 3-3 and could’ve gone on to win the game in the end.”

I watched a clip of the 0- 8 defeat to Wolves on their site, grim watching. It's probably unfair to single out any one person based on clips but James Yates had a shocker before being replaced at half time, losing the ball for the first goal and hopelessly out of position for the next two. His failure to track back and follow his opponent was something I noticed when he played for Englandu17/18s in the World Cup. His attacking skill is never going to cover this up if it remains a deficiency. The rest of the goals were either just schoolboy defending or fine individual goals by the Wolves players. It'll be a tough job this week for the coaches turning this around and it will be interesting to see how they split the resources between a strong u18 team or a strong U21 team in the two matches against Liverpool this weekend.
