Everton Youth Teams Thread

Accrington Stanley only just played a League 2 game yesterday so there aren't many regular players involved for them tonight. 2 of their starters came on as subs and 4 were on the bench though so it's not just their U21 team either.

Great stuff, I think that's about 6 or 7 games without defeat now. We do seem to have a bad habit at u21/u18 level of conceding goals straight from the kick off or within the first few minutes, you would think that it is a lack of concentration at this level. It happens too often.
Nice to see Kenny back in the team, Joe Williams still captain, which is a great testament to him, and chipping in with another goal .

Everton Under-21s are through to the Lancashire Senior Cup final after coming from behind to win 2-1 against Accrington Stanley.

A first-half goal from Joe Williams cancelled out Marcus Carver’s early opener before a last-gasp winner from Courtney Duffus sent the young Blues through to the final of a competition they last won in 1964.

Just like last Thursday’s Premier League Cup win over Newcastle United, David Unsworth’s side found themselves one goal down within the opening minutes.

The visitors worked it well down the right-hand side and Carver stooped low to head home Gerardo Bruna’s cross and give his side an early advantage.

Despite the early goal, the young Blues responded well with Sam Byrne, Kieran Dowell and Williams all coming close with efforts from outside the box.

And that positive response from the Toffees would pay off just before the half hour mark when Williams pulled his side level with a brilliant individual goal.

The skipper, who was impressive throughout, picked up the ball in midfield and skipped past three defenders before firing low past Ross Etheridge in the Accrington goal.

Everton emerged from the break and immediately put their opponents under pressure as Dowell had a left-footed strike saved by the keeper before Jonjoe Kenny poked an effort just side.

Despite the Toffees dominating for large spells of the second half, the Accrington keeper was only called into action with ten minutes remaining.

Substitute Duffus was found in the box by Dowell but the strikers fizzing effort was denied by the legs of goalkeeper Etheridge.

With extra-time looming, the Blues pressed for a late winner and just like six days ago against Newcastle, substitute Duffus was the late hero once again.

Matty Foulds raced down the left-hand side and whipped in a pin-point cross for Duffus, who headed home to secure a richly-deserved victory and with it a place in the Lancashire Senior Cup final.

It’s back to league action for Unsworth’s side next, as they face Southampton at home on Monday (25 January).

Everton starting XI: Gray, Kenny, Foulds, Davies, Pennington, Connolly, Dowell, Williams, Byrne (C. Duffus, 76), Evans (Charsley, 53), McAleny (Dyson).
Everton unused substitutes: Griffiths, Feeney.

Accrington Stanley starting XI: Etheridge, Wakefield, Smith, Barry, Davies, Pritchard, Racchi, Carver, Gornell, Bruna.
Accrington Stanley substitutes: Evans, Hickey, Webb, Steenson, Morgan.

Nice that Foulds got an assist.

Anyone know how ledson getting on down at cambridge, do think it came at just the right time 4 the lad. he really was looking a cracking player 4 the future couple years back and a potential leader in future the way he was taking control on the pitch, but since he got moved up to the u21’s its like it all went a bit stale 4 the lad so hopefully this loan is that little kickstart he’s needed

Some seasons the academy throws up a player that has progressed more than others , a player that forces the management at the top level to start bringing them into their reckoning.
In recent seasons we have seen this with Browning, Galloway, Barkley and probably McAleny as well.
That does not appear to be happening this term with the possible exception of Conor Grant at Doncaster.
