Everton Youth Teams Thread

Daily mail are running a story on man u youth teams and had been neglected over the last few years. Surprised at this after the era of Beckham, giggs, scholes. Their under 18 are 30 points behind the leaders.

It's a load of rubbish really as has already been mentioned in this thread.

The league tables are not worth a carrot either although United's under 21's are the most impressive of the u21 teams at the moment sitting strongly in 2nd with a few games in hand. The u21 league is more prestigious than the u18's league.

Liverpool going great in the u18's league are in a relegation battle in the u21's league and they've spent fortunes on there u21's team.

The tables mean nothing.

The under 21 league isnt competitive enough for me. I would like us to go with the Spanish model of B Teams being in League One etc.
That will never happen though because of the level of support for teams lower down the leagues. They hate the idea of their league being 'used' to train players for the prem, and also the fact that B teams wouldn't have proper supporters so some of their games wouldn't feel like real games. I'd love to see the model adopted too though but I just don't think it will ever happen here.

It's a shame cos it could be a good idea if done correctly.

If all of the clubs with Elite Category One status for their academies were allowed to enter a B team then it's be about 20 clubs. If they were then added to the footballing pyramid at the Conference North/South level, the FA could actually review all of the teams and actually make them regional, because at present they're not a true representation of the geography.

They could have North/South/Central or something. The B teams could have special regulations to ensure they only have players who have come through the Academy with perhaps 2 non-Academy players, and be forced to fix the prices of the gate to something affordable for fans, which is cheaper than the division average.

No doubt clubs would see the level as too low and want them in League 1 or something, but over time they could work their way up there. It may also bring renewed interest to the non-league scene from people who wouldn't normally be involved.

.....there appears a growing acceptance that U21 League hasn't been a success. It says something when some of our promising youngsters are sent to non-league teams (Skelmersdale and Stockport) playing with lads who I have recently seen in the Liverpool Sunday Premier League.

Exactly mate, which is why I think they need to do the B team thing. But if they make it exclusive to Elite Cat. One clubs, then it gives them an incentive and kind of elevates them further. At the level I suggested like you said with Stockport and Skem, the younger lads could compete and learn their way without it being too much like say a league 1 may be for some, after youth football.

Things will eventually level themselves off, but it may give a much needed boost to those teams already in those divisions as well.

....B teams might well be the way forward. If there is a change, though, it could be more along the lines of the old open age Central League where youngsters can mix it with seasoned professionals. I know older players can turn out for the U21s but if the likes of Robles, Hibbert, McGeady and Gibson were playing regularly it could be beneficial for youngsters and let us better judge their worth.
