Everton Under-21s made it seven games unbeaten with an impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Finch Farm on Monday evening.

The visitors headed to Merseyside having lost just one league game all season but goals from Mason Holgate and Calum Dyson secured a much-deserved win for David Unsworth’s side.

Despite windy conditions, the young Blues took control of the game and enjoyed plenty of the possession in the early stages with Leandro Rodriguez,Kieran Dowell and Matthew Pennington all going close within the opening 10 minutes.

A constant threat down the left-hand side, Matty Foulds worked a great one-two with Tom Davies before finding Dowell at the back post but the midfielder could only steer his effort wide of the target.

The Blues were getting closer and on the half-hour mark they got the goal that their play had merited.

Davies and Dowell were involved once again as they worked a short corner before the latter whipped in a pin-point cross and defender Holgate was there to head home the opener.

The Toffees dominated the opening 45 minutes but it was United, who had first-team star Adan Januzaj in their starting line-up, that carved out the first opportunity after the restart as Joe Riley sent an effort just wide.

Unsworth’s side had to continue to weather the storm as United, who had scored an impressive 20 goals in their last six league games, searched for an equaliser.

Matthew Willock and Janazaj both had efforts from outside the box but Louis Gray wasn’t troubled in the Everton goal.

With less than a quarter of an hour remaining, Unsworth made a change asSam Byrne replaced the hardworking Rodriguez and within minutes the substitution paid off.

Following good work on the right-hand side, the lively Harry Charsley found substitute Bryne who supplied an inch-perfect cross for Dyson who headed home to end United’s run of six straight wins and seal an all-important victory.

The young Blues will now turn their attentions to the Premier League Cup as they face Brighton and Hove Albion at Southport next Tuesday (9 February).

Everton: Gray, Connolly, Foulds, Davies, Pennington, Holgate, Dowell, Williams, Dyson, Rodriguez, Charsley.

Manchester United: Pereira, Fosu-Mensah, Williams, Love, Riley, Januzaj, Willock, Harrop, Redmond, Weir, Keane.

That's right mate about the private education.

We send our kids to Wade Deacon, a normal school in Widnes, Liverpool send there to Rainfall High in St. Helens. Man City send there's to St. Bedes where they used to play there academy games, 30k per year to go there.

I am not too sure about the older kids, I only no in debth what's happening with the younger age groups but I'm still adamant that the individual is better suited being at United or Everton than City were there's more of a focus on developing them and not the team.

United literally don't care at all for results and if they had there way wouldn't even play competitive football, it's all about the needs of the individual.
Loads of Everton lads have home to St Bedes as well btw, Dowell was the year below me when I was there but I left in like year 9 so dunno if he stayed

Interesting direct quotes from Keith Curle about someone he wanted from our U21s who played on Monday (it's the Star but at least they have quotes from him):

He said: “I was at Finch Farm to watch the Everton U21s take on Manchester United (on Monday night).

“I had two players I wanted to see again, having seen them before, because we are always keen to complete our due diligence before we commit ourselves to anything.

“I had good conversations with Everton on Sunday about the availability of their player and we were told they would potentially be very comfortable with the idea of a loan move for him.

“There was also a Manchester United player involved who we have been monitoring, but we wanted to make sure that both lads are ready to step into our first team environment before we took it any further.

“We’ve worked hard at it but, when it comes down to it, the player has to want to come to the club and his representatives have to want him to do that as well.”
