I don't see why, we've been awful for weeks and the league season is over. Liverpool and United have both started academy players this season - in fact United have given debuts to about 10 of theirs - and we haven't played any, even against terrible league 2 teams, despite players like Dowell cruising through the U21 league this season.

who like? whats the point in sticking the likes of gibson or pienaar in when they have no future at the club and are counting down the weeks until they leave.

So he's just going to put 2 young players on the bench "out of necessity". No chance of Dowell starting then, I doubt he'll even get on the pitch.

Just read that , and I'm appalled . We've debated on this thread all season which youngsters we'd like to see in a first team squad , any excitemen of looking forward to seeing which two it will be is taken away by this statement :
"Martinez admits the call-ups are more out of necessity, given the first-team’s injury problems, than the idea of wanting to blood the club’s young players." So we don't really want to blood young players .

Fwiw, I'm hoping for Dowell and Connolly, but think it will be Dowell and Holgate .

Dowell has been injured for half the season hasnt he?

in his spot are mirallas/deulofeu/lennon/clev/kone and perhaps niasse and oviedo as well...

Its unlikely any manager would put dowell in as 1st choice with no gametime.

He's got to get game time at some point though doesn't he? Why not as a reward for playing so well recently when we've got a tight schedule and the rest of the team are playing like they've given up anyway. Out of the players you've mentioned, Kone is awful, Cleverley is injured, Niasse is unfit and Oviedo is a left back. And on top of that, Dowell has been playing as a number 10 recently so Barkley needing a rest/having a slight injury would actually be a perfect opportunity to give Dowell a chance with no pressure on him, but we'll likely play an unfit Barkley or a weird formation/players out of position instead.

We seem to be the only team in the league that played no youth players in the early cup games (apart from Pennington, who got dragged off at half time and then didn't start another game, then got sent out on loan to league 1 when he'd already won player of the year at a better league 1 club last season). I'm really starting to lose faith in Martinez's use of the academy.

he was injured for the first 3 months and has been flying since the turn of the year whilst the players you mention have been largely dung apart from lennon.

Hes surprised us before with galloway last season.

Not sure who people wanted him to play in the past 2+ seasons as the players havent been premier league level.

Zat, Dowell was in grate form before his injury and yet hadn't made a singole squad, since coming back from injury he is playing better than before and has scored some absolute amazing goals as well the past few weeks - the lads confidence is sky high right now and it would be the perfect time to 'blood' him - in what effectively is a meaningless end of season in many regards re league results.

From everything i know about him he plays in the same position Barkely does, so in this squad their is only really Barkley currently who plays that position and if he misses why not go for the young lad to play, all said and done we slated Moyes for npot giving barkley games at the same age

As for the no gametime argument - isn't that a fault of Martinez for not getting him some game time in the past 4 games - when frankly the players starting have been playing as bad as they can?

It goes back to the discussion we have had about me not thinking Martinez is anything special when it comes to trusting young players really - Even though i don't like him if Dowell, Kenny, Williams, Walsh, Davies etc where in one of his squads then some/all of those players would have been given some time to show if they are up to it yet, same if they where at Spurs and a fair few other clubs with managers who actually trust the youth from their own academy - which to all intents and purposes Martinez has shown no signs of doing.

Honestly if we hadn't had an injury crisis this year atb the back i don't think Browning or Galloway would have played a game yet and we would be left with just players with high reputaion that martinez had bought (Lukaku, Deulofeu) or players he inherited with huge reps (stones and Barkley) as the evidence he 'trusts' youth.

How many games have we used 1 or 2 subs in this season, why not just have a lad on the bench then to experience the match day in its entirety and then depending on the ga,me and how its going we can maybe give them a chance to play 10-15 minutes - Villa - twice, Sunderland and the various cup games where all big examples of us being able to do this and yet we didn't mate, question needs to be asked why really, if you went through all the teams in this league and looked at how many academy players each have used and how many minutes they have gotten this season - i think we would be found right near the bottom of that list - which in itself would say a lot about things

Mate he played Galloway last season due to the contract mess that we found oursleves in with Garbutt and the fact it looked like in a few weeks he was off on a free, Garbutt would have signed a new contract earleir then he doesn't play galloway i am sure of that.

Did Browning improve that much over the summer - in which case why didn't he get maybe a few minute more here and their mate, and IF they don't get played ofc people are always going to assume they aren't good enough - but had anyone really heard of Rashford or their young fullback until they played him?

Who knows if Kenny or Ledson for example would have been able to play last season - developmentally those two and Gomes at the rs and Roberts (was Fulham now City) where all pretty much on a par at the end of the euro championship win, yet both Roberts and ceartainly Gomes pre injury had had their development handled far better, one was starting for a liverpool team in the league and the other has played games in the prem, cups and loaned to Celtic, our lads are basically playing in the 4th tier of English football atm

Can't check all the lads from that Euro team, but our two - one was the captain (Ledson) and the other was with Roberts the standout player of the side, and yet their progression since then is arguably going to be the weakest of any in that team
