Everton Youth Teams Thread

Re the U18 league and the UEFA Youth Champions League or whatever it's called, I believe we can qualify for this if the U18s finish 2nd and City win it. This requires us to win the two games left which won't be easy given that so far in this league we haven't appeared to dominate matches like we can . It also depends on Chelsea dropping points too.

I'm not absolutely sure about this , but the Youth CL is based upon the four teams from a country who qualify for the actual CL , plus the winner of the country's Youth League. (Too me it's crazy criteria and doesn't reward the clubs with good youth teams I.e. Leicester get in the Youth competition but we don't. ) Anyway , if City qualify for CL and win the Youth league then I believe the 2nd place team in the Youth League goes into the competition as well.

Totally, i've always thought this as well. It's not a champions league at all, because you could have the best youth teams not even in the competition purely based on what their 1st team are doing.

On the flip side, you could have an U18's team, winning their league, and their whole squad is promoted to U21's and you'd have a totally different team (albeit the same club) at the competition. There's no real right way to go about it to be fair.

I was surprised that Dowell wasn't even included in the squad for Southampton.

Proved he can play albeit in pre season with the first team, worked hard in the 21's for months, scored great goals, created chances from a number 10 position which the first team have struggled with, yet he still cant get an opportunity when were hampered by injuries.

I think Ossies been a great servant over the years but when were building for the future, in the remaining home games now that we haven't got much to play for in the league, It's an excellent chance to give the likes of Dowell, Connolly, Davies, Galloway, Holgate, Brewster, Broadhead, Evans some game time. I understand that not all of them will get a chance but the integration of them into the first team now, will make them ready to step up when required in the future.

You could say that Martinez needs to win games and is sticking by the experienced players, but if anything the fans are more understanding, more encouraging of the academy lads. One thing that is guaranteed, is that the lads who do play will work hard, get stuck in and wear the blue shirt with pride, just like any one of us would if we were on the pitch, which is a hell of a lot more than what Martinez is getting from some of his first team players at the moment.

totally agree. i think martinez has a tad too much sentiment. I think he feels that players like osman and howard SHOULD be given a proper farewell because of their long service to us, he's trying to think too much like an everton fan rather than worrying what's best for his job. Dowell should have been played (if fit), if connelly and davies were - but maybe he's still making a decision on whether osman should be here next season.

I honestly don't see any circumstances or reason that ossie should be here next season unless it is a coaching role.

For the limited number of games that i've seen him play, he looks to be a Jagielka sort of centre half, and with Jags being 34 in August could get his chance soon. Big pre season ahead for him but I'm sure he's looking forward to the challenge.
The Jags comparison is a good one, how many games did he play for Sheffield Utd before he joined us.? He looks to be more composed than say Shayne Duffy was , but he's no Stones. I really hope that he's given the time to develop.

I hope Dowell was the third youngster in the frame but lost out as Martinez went for more experience in midfield.

Jags racked up close to 300 games for Sheff Utd before we signed him.

Yer Pennington looks more of an old fashioned centre half, but has the ability to play as well, which Duffy seemed to struggle with.

I think it would be unfair to compare any of the youth centre halfs with Stones for distribution, anyone who can compare will certainly be highly rated!

Can Tony Hibbert solve Everton's right-back problems ahead of Merseyside derby?
Veteran expecting to feature for Blues under-21s against Man City on Monday

Tony Hibbert could be asked to solve Everton’s right-back headache - if he comes through a game for the under-21s on Monday night.

The veteran defender is expecting to feature for the Blues’s second string against Manchester City u-21s at Goodison (7pm).

Everton have been struck by an injury crisis ahead of the defining week of their season, in which they face Liverpool on Wednesday night and then Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Seamus Coleman limped off during the second-half against Southampton on Saturday with a hamstring injury to join Phil Jagielka, Aaron Lennon, Leighton Baines and Tom Cleverley on the sidelines.

Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, meanwhile, were only fit enough to be named on the bench at Goodison.

Coleman was replaced by teenager Callum Connolly, who performed well on his debut, but it’s unclear if Roberto Martinez would throw the Academy graduate in from the start against Liverpool at Anfield.

But Martinez’s options at right-back are limited.

Tyias Browning is out for the season after undergoing a knee operation while the absence of Baines and Brendan Galloway - both currently injured - would prevent Bryan Oviedo switching to right-back, as he has done this season.

Matthew Pennington, who played in that position against Barnsley in the Capital One Cup, is on loan at Walsall and so Martinez is ready to give Hibbert the chance to prove his fitness.

The 35-year-old has endured seasons of injury hell and has not played for Everton since December 6, 2014, when the Blues lost 1-0 to Man City.

But Hibbert could be in line for a shock return to the side this week.
