Everton Youth Teams Thread

Issue re: Kenny is we only have one RB in the squad so it's either do we buy new or keep Kenny as back up which he seems more than ready for.

That's a good point. I know I am in a minority here but I see Browning & Pennington as very capable right backs who are just as good there as at centre half. I think what happens with Kenny will depend on their fitness.

Galloway needs to play CB but he's too inexperienced in that position at the moment or I would have kept him around.
Galloway is someone who , having made PL teams regularly , doesn't get discussed much here, but course is still only 20.
It's a bit worrying that he's picked up injuries regularly, but in the U21s game v Chelsea he played CB and was in my opinion our man of the match. It's was a very mature performance , holding a talented Chelsea side to 0-0 and also guiding young LB Matty Foulds throughout the match. He's 1st team squad for me, and if playing alongside Jagielka he'd be fine, Stones and Funes Mori less so. Maybe Captain of u21s with Williams out , play Monday night if not in Saturday's game.

The new manager and his coaching team will be key, together with pre season , in helping decide who stays at FF , who goes out on loan etc.

They can but Kenny is a natural RB to me and I'd like to see Penno and Browning given opportunities in their rightful position. Have to remember those two are older than any of the other academy lads we've brought on lately so think time is now - or very soon - for them to stake a claim in their rightful position. Plus I don't really want any square pegs in round holes situations with the new managements; I understand modern football means players need to adapt but feel sorry for shunting players into new positions.

kenny (as well as ledson and connolly) is likely to miss the start of pre-season due to the u19 euros. puts them at a bit of a disadvantage when trying to stake their claim for first team next season with new manager.

Well maybe. I think Browning and Pennington's best positions may well be fullback though, particularly for a manager that wants to be solid defensively. I worry about Browning's positional play in the centre but I think he is a great athlete who will get up and down at fullback.

This is a very good point. Well Davies, Dowell & Walsh will get an opportunity to nail down a place at least!

Possibly with the recovery period after needed but I'd hope the next manager will do his research and know what these players are about so he could say "okay they'll join the first team late but I definitely want them around".

Browning can agree on but Pennington is definitely a CB from watching him at Coventry. I don't think either of them are necessarily long term PL standard but for now they're good stand-ins. Interesting to see how Browning comes back from this injury. Other full-back's in the academy like Jones have got no chance here IMO.

I agree, I don't think anyone has ever said Jones was going to make it, I know I haven't. Kenny stands a decent chance.

IDK, I see Browning and Pennington as central defenders. I think Browning could be a young Sylvain Distin.

Jonjoe Kenny really is a cracking player. I've followed him closely since the U18s when I first saw him play in the youth cup at Goodison 2/3 years ago. He was playing centre half and he was the best player on the pitch by an absolute mile. I went to that game expecting Ledson to be the outstanding player but it was Kenny who outshone everybody; and by some considerable margin. When he came on against Norwich I had absolutely no doubt whatsoever that he would put in an impressive performance. A very, very natural defender. I hope (and expect) he will have a long and successful career at Everton.
