Everton Youth Teams Thread

It would be nice to hear a wee bit about the why's and wherefores of team selection. Good to see Feeney playing again at this level with so many other options available like Connolly as CB , Robinson at Left back, so I'm thinking they probabably want Connolly getting game time at LB as cover behind Oviedo and Funes Mori. And I wonder what's happened to Matty Foulds, is he injured, another good choice for left CB position. ?
That's some defensive record Unsy is building though, whatever defence he puts out they seem impregnable, and having Walsh and Williams ahead of you as DFMs must help.

Glad the CA lads made a good impression, getting up at 4am on a weekend to watch us get thrashed in the derby tends to weed out the weaklings lol @ilikecheese
It was lashing it down on a chilly afternoon, and we're watching a gang of kids in a barely 1/10th full upper Bullens, and the absolute glee of these lads just being there.. Honestly, it was humbling.

As you know I'm a big Connolly fan, he's continually impressed with his versatility throughout the past two seasons at club and international level. At just turned 19 he's got plenty of time to develop and certainly the skill set. What he seems to lack is a "presence" the way that Stones, Galloway and Browning had when they first appeared in the full back role, or the out and out pace of a Luke Shaw.
He's probabably the most naturally two footed player at the club, particularly useful when he's playing on the left as he's got a cracking right foot shot to go with strong left foot crosses. It's all about getting that vital experience now, and as ever how do you break into a team full of internationals with internationals on the bench too. At the moment I'd say he's just one injury to a left sided defender, Oviedo, Funes Mori, Williams , away from a bench spot, though sadly in a crisis we're as likely to play Cleverly at LB as Connolly. I don't think he's shown enough this season to force his way in but this is where the coaching set up comes in , preparing him in what he needs to do if called upon to come on as a sub, and take it from there.

The Guardian have done their annual pick the best player from the U18 squads of each team thing.

After choosing Dowell and Evans in the last 2 years they've picked Alex Denny as our one to watch.

Not seem him play yet but he is in the current England U17 squad who are meant to be the best team we've had at that level in a long time.

I'm sure they beat Germany 8-1 this week

Yeah he came off the bench v Croatia, played full 90 v Greece and off bench v Germany , they won all 3 games easily.
Denny featured in the Dallas tournament about 5 months ago when he was a schoolboy age 15 . He played in midfield and looked a talented and sturdy player, big for his age and there's a photo of him after an England goal where he appeared to be the tallest of the bunch around him . It looks at this early stage that Fraser Hornby and Denny are the pick of the new scholars , cue future statements of " the next Ross Barkley"

Unsy's U23 side are at League 2 side Cheltenham tonight in the Checkatrade Trophy incase anyone wasn't aware, big chance to make it 8 wins from 9 in all competitions and, like last time out at Bolton, with a shadow side. A win guarantees progression to the knockout round with one game to spare depending on the Bolton/Blackpool result. A draw in that one coupled with a win for our boys would mean they would only need a point when Blackpool come to GP next month, a Bolton win would clinch the group

I'm going to this. Do you reckon the legend that is Oumar might get a game?!!!

Win tonight and the u23s are almost in the next round, the next game after tonight is Blackpool in early november

Should be same tonight as it was for Bolton game in august,
Reminder that tonight's group game will be decided by penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.
You get three points for a win, two for a penalty win, one for a penalty loss and nothing for a defeat in 90 minutes.
