Young U23s side defeated by table-topping Toffees
It was a tough night for Reading's Under-23s, who were defeated 6-3 by league leaders Everton at Adams Park - thanks in no small part to a hat-trick by multi-million pound signing Oumar Niasse.

The 26-year-old Senegal international, who joined the Toffees for a fee reported as £13.5 million in February, hit a first-half treble to overturn two early goals by Andrija Novakovich. Kieran Dowell, Liam Walsh and Dominic Calvert-Lewin - who joined in a £1.5 million deal from Sheffield United in the summer - each netted after the break, before Tom McIntyre grabbed a late consolatory goal for the Royals.

The Royals were fielding a young side even in Premier League 2 terms, with nine of the starting XI still teenagers and all five substitutes aged just 18. All of the 16 Royals in the squad were Academy graduates and they made a cracking start to the contest when Adrija Novakovich bagged a brace within the first quarter of an hour. But winter window signing Niasse, formerly of Lokomotiv Moscow, kick-started a comeback with three in reply as Everton extended their lead at the top of the table.

After an opening ten minutes that saw Everton enjoy the majority of possession, it was the Royals that had the killer instinct on the break... Josh Barrett picked up the ball on the half way line and drove deep into the Everton half, before picking out Novakovich in the centre with a fine cross. The forward swivelled well with the ball to lose his man, before firing a shot from the centre of the box into the top corner for the opener.

Four minutes later and the Royals had doubled their lead, with Novakovich converting his second of the night. It was the same combination again, as Ireland youth international Josh Barrett made a dangerous run down the right flank and picked out Novakovich in the middle, who rose brilliantly to power his header past Mateusz Hewelt in the Everton goal.

As the game ticked towards the 20 minute-mark Everton found a way back into the game through experienced forward Niasse. A Liam Walsh free-kick from the right wing found the Senegalese striker the middle of the Reading box. Siz yards from the Royals goal, he made no mistake by heading home to bring the Toffees to within a goal.

And the leveller came in the 38th minute; Niasse again converting from a few yards out. This time it was a mistake at the back from the Royals that handed Everton possession as the ball was quickly worked across the area to the Senegalese striker, who converted.

Three minutes later and the Everton turnaround was complete and the 26-year-old striker had his hat-trick. The ball was fed into the Reading box from the right wing with Everton in the ascendancy with Niasse collecting the ball quickly and clinically converting his finish to give table-topping Toffees the lead.

The league leaders continued the second half as the ended the first, with a high pressure game not allowing the young Royals side any time on the ball. It wasn’t long until the away side had increased their lead further - Dowell was the scorer, showing quick feet inside the Reading area before slotting home past Moore was unable to keep his low effort out.

The Toffees were really on top at this stage and all but ensured the three points when Calvert-Lewin converted emphatically on the five minutes short of the hour. The former Sheffield United striker found himself in a bit of space just inside Reading’s 18-yard box and worked the ball onto his right foot before unleashing a powerful shot which flew past Moore and into the top corner.

As the second half progressed the Royals looked to try and work themselves back into the game, but were rebuffed on a number of occasion by to backs-to-the-wall defending from Everton. Josh Barrett delivered a number of dangerous set pieces into the Everton box, the closest of which was almost converted when defender McIntyre latched onto the ball at the back post. The young centre-half headed the ball back across the face of the Toffees goal, but after a desperate scramble the visitors managed to clear.

Just as it seemed Kuhl’s side were beginning to find a way back into the fixture, Walsh fired home a sixth goal for the visitors. The midfielder found space 20 yards from goal before picking a precise finish to put the game well beyond doubt.

Reading did manage to pull one back late on when McIntyre headed in powerfully a minute from time to reduce the deficit. A good ball back into the box after Barrett’s corner was initially cleared, picked out the 17-year-old who headed beyond Hewelt and into the back of the Everton net, ending the affair on a more positive note.

...nice to see Calvert-Lewin continue to chip in with his quota, certainly a lot of goals in our youth games!!

A big challenge for Unsworth was to get sides scoring goals. We had all been impressed with how he set sides up and organised them defensively, but the next level of his development was to harness the attacking talent. The pressure on this has been heightened by the fact we look to have kept a lot of the talented younger lads together in the team and they are not at an age when they should be competitive. Walsh, Connolly, Kenny, Dowell, Davies, Williams all formed the basis of a golden generation and were making regular appearances for the reserves from 16/17. Now they are all 18/19 so it would be reasonable to expect them to step up.

So far he has passed this test with flying colours. We look like we can grind results out, but also at times we can hammer teams with the superior quality. This has partly been helped by having Niasse but a lot of credit has to go to Unsworth. What's most pleasing is that lads like Walsh are really kicking on. Davies doesn't look the standout player in spite of performing well for the first team. Hopefully there is a strategy to start getting lads involved. Walsh and Davies cannot be a long way off the first team. If Mirallas/Deulofeu don't get consistency maybe Dowell is as well.

As a final point nice to see Hornby doing so well. I do rate him and always thought he was a very decent number 6. It looks like we are pushing him into the 10 at under 18's and he is just too big and strong for his competition. The only cautionary note though is it is a big jump from under 18's to reserves, particularly into our reserves who are performing so well. Last year Broadhead dominated the under 18's but hasn't had an appearance for the under 23's.

that top scorer list is surely wrong, the mighty niasse has at least 5

I have watched the u23s a few times and always been impressed, there has to some in that team who can move up to the squad.
It may seem far fetched but this side with a couple of overage players would get promotion from league 2 and make a fist of league 1.
I shall go to the trophy game against Blackpool. We should have a full squad at Goodison, whereas we had nine out of the possible team on international duty against Cheltenham.

i would like to think koeman has a plan for introducing the likes of walsh and kenny into the first team throughout the season though early signs arent good. maybe with the traditional busy period at xmas he might be forced into it. not sure how many of our african lads will be away in january but that might open up a few opportunities too.

Highest scorers (per game at U18 and overall at U23) around.

The current U23 side is our golden generation, they've been smashing teams from U16 onwards. Now they are doing the same at U21 level. We need that core of Kenny/Davies/Walsh/Dowell to keep moving on up and not lose momentum. Walsh showed he could boss it in League 2 at 18 as did Kenny. We really need to find a way to get these players first team minutes. Oh and Unsworth for our next manager please too.

Ha ! Bit of journalistic licence from their guy, making out that we were a team of millionaires playing kids. If I'm not mistaken nine of our 10 outfielder players are also still teenagers, the exception being Niasse, and I'm sure the majority of us who follow the academy football would prefer to see Broadhead or Brewster be given an opportunity ahead of him.

The most impressive thing is that, up until last nights match, Unsy has been able to develop the offensive side of the team without affecting our defensive solidity. Think they must have been caught napping last night, but it was good the way they didn't panic and got themselves back into it pretty quickly. As Unsy would say, it's good for their development to get these different scenarios.

Not really seen much of Hornby but he is a big lad for 17. Took his goals well at the weekend and appears to be pretty versatile which will give him more opportunities you would have thought. Just another midfielder to add to our list of great potential we have at the moment. As you say, difficult to see how they can all be accommodated in the U23s. I'd add Brewster to Broadhead in those not getting a look in. He looked the bees knees last year in the U18s.

..Brewster was ok but didn't pull trees up at Stockport, he was playing with lads who played with my son in the Liverpool Sunday Premier League. That was an indicator for me, even though he was young he should've been a stand out. The club have paid money for Hornby, it might be wrong but I think that will move him up the queue as they will give him every chance for a return on their investment.
