Ronald Koeman is liaising regularly with
David Unsworth over the players who are under the wing of the Blues’ Under-23 coach.
Mason Holgate started the Premier League season in the first team and
Tom Davies has also seen first-team action, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and
Mateusz Hewelt both making the matchday squad against West Ham United.
The Everton boss receives regular updates from Unsworth about the progression of the players in his group, with regulars
Gethin Jones,
Kieran Dowell,
Callum Connolly and
Jonjoe Kenny also having made their first team debuts previously. All are regularly involved in first team training.
“We have a lot of contact with
David Unsworth and we see a lot of the Under-23 games,” Koeman said. “It is still a bit early for them and they need more experience and competition, but we have good talents and they will get chances.
“At the moment I think the situation with the first team is not the best to put them in. We need more experienced players and more personality to change this situation right now.
“If you put young players in the starting line-up, you know that they are ready. We have some good, talented young players but if you put one in the first team, he needs support. You don’t just put him in for one game – it is for a long time.”
The Under-23s currently sit atop the Premier League 2 table, with only two defeats in the league all season.
Koeman and his staff have been in attendance for a number of their fixtures and they have caught his eye with a number of notable performances, while some youngsters have regularly been involved in first team training sessions.
“I’ve been very impressed,” he added. “I know we always want to win but [for the Under-23s] it’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is to get players ready for the first team.
“Every week they are really involved in training, they understand how we like to play and how we like to work in sessions. They get involved in lots of first-team training sessions and they are improving.
“Obviously, it’s great for them to be winning games because it gives the young boys confidence to finally go and provide competition for places.
