Everton Youth Teams Thread

The reality is that Koeman was enticed to us by Moshiri's millions not the fact we have the best group of youngsters for a long time. So it was always going to be this way, and if we were in the top 4 I would shrug my shoulders and live with it.

The disappointment for me is that RK doesn't appear to be hands on in moving the youngsters up. For instance all the back four from Monday night have played PL minutes at some time, as a top class coach he should be capable of taking the likes of Connolly and Kenny and saying these are your weaknesses , when you play in my team I want you to be in this position, move this way , play the ball this way etc. Kenny said a month ago he hadn't even had a proper conversation with him.

None of that back four stand out the way Stones did, but very few defenders do at 19/20 , but you can see the progression Holgate, Kenny and Connolly have made even since last season . It looks to me that their future progression lies with Unsworth and the loan system. But the optimist in me hopes that one or two of them will be given a chance in whatever circumstances.
Good post. He's been to see one U23 game & Kenny hasn't had a proper conversation with him. In a nutshell that's the problem. He's got no interest in bringing young players on & unless there's some amazing run of injuries you won't be seeing them played. He may be sitting on a goldmine, but he's off to the jewellers for his gold!

Gents I have to honest I haven't watched the youth teams much so not really on a position to judge them so to those who do, Which of the current crop look as though they are close to being ready for the seniors?

I say this as lads like Henen and long and others seem to be hot prospects but seem to be just short

It isn't the opinon of RK that counts at the moment regarding the academy players , it is Steve Walsh.
Steve Walsh has to find players for Everton FC to fit the requirements of the manager.
He has to find players for the team today and players for the future.

The first place he is going to look is at the academy at Everton and work with Dave Unsworth, Joe Royle, Kevin Sheedy and others. Between them they will decide who has a future at the club and also who, if any, are ready for the first team.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be giving them a go, but the way people are on here is like we have another 10 Rooneys waiting.
Watching the U23's, the only players who remotely ready for a stint in the 1st team are Holgate and Walsh. Davies is near, but still has a lot to learn in reading the game. He'd do well playing the odd game.

We're in a position that we haven't been in since the Moores days. It's nice to bring through youth players, but we can afford to go out and get proven quality.

People have to realise, the United 92 team was a one off. You'll never get a group of players come through, all together like that again.

Re the Class of 92, I'll just C&P something from another thread

Here's the thing with playing young players

There was no guarantee that the Class of 92 were going to make it

None at all

People say it will never happen again, and they're right

The reason it will never happen again is not because there isn't a group of youngsters at a Premier League Club good enough to do it, but ultimately because no manager will ever have the guts and bravery to do what Ferguson did

The view of Alan Hansen was the view of the majority back in 1995 when Ferguson gave those lads a chance

But he stuck by his guns and it paid off

Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Butt and The Nevilles would never had made it if they hadn't been given the minutes they were given when they were given them. If they'd been stuck in the same cycle as a Conor McAlney, they wouldn't have risen above it either

At some point, you just have to be brave enough to believe in the kids

I can guarantee you that if a forum like GOT was around for Man United supporters in 1995, threads would be full of angry knee jerkers following that defeat to Villa on the first day of the season demanding that Beckham, Scholes, The Nevilles and Butt not be played any more because they weren't good enough and never would be and that big money needed to be spent on proven players etc

It really says all you need to know about Ferguson's brilliance that he stuck with those players when he did, even when pundits from every corner were declaring it the death knell for his team

Just goes to show that if you really want kids to make it, you have to eventually bite the bullet and take a chance

Unfortunately, we live in such a risk averse climate these days that I just can't see it happening, and football is much worse off for it IMO

good point mate, Walsh has got to have a hand in pushing some of the youth players up to the first team squad and get rid of the absolute no marks who have contributed the square route of sod all the past couple of seasons.

..I hope not, I'm a fan. I am just saying there was a link to that affect in the last week or so.

just read the link and it was for loan move which would be good for him:

EVERTON teen Liam Walsh may be on his way to Bolton on loan in January.
Charlton and Millwall are also eyeing the midfielder, 19.
The Trotters could sell defender Mark Beevers in New Year.

...the one I saw wasn't club specific, just said there is plenty of interest in him and the club might be prepared to sell with him having little opportunity at first team level.

Ronald Koeman is liaising regularly with David Unsworth over the players who are under the wing of the Blues’ Under-23 coach.

Mason Holgate started the Premier League season in the first team and Tom Davies has also seen first-team action, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Mateusz Hewelt both making the matchday squad against West Ham United.

The Everton boss receives regular updates from Unsworth about the progression of the players in his group, with regulars Gethin Jones, Kieran Dowell, Callum Connolly and Jonjoe Kenny also having made their first team debuts previously. All are regularly involved in first team training.

“We have a lot of contact with David Unsworth and we see a lot of the Under-23 games,” Koeman said. “It is still a bit early for them and they need more experience and competition, but we have good talents and they will get chances.

“At the moment I think the situation with the first team is not the best to put them in. We need more experienced players and more personality to change this situation right now.

“If you put young players in the starting line-up, you know that they are ready. We have some good, talented young players but if you put one in the first team, he needs support. You don’t just put him in for one game – it is for a long time.”

The Under-23s currently sit atop the Premier League 2 table, with only two defeats in the league all season.

Koeman and his staff have been in attendance for a number of their fixtures and they have caught his eye with a number of notable performances, while some youngsters have regularly been involved in first team training sessions.

“I’ve been very impressed,” he added. “I know we always want to win but [for the Under-23s] it’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is to get players ready for the first team.

“Every week they are really involved in training, they understand how we like to play and how we like to work in sessions. They get involved in lots of first-team training sessions and they are improving.

“Obviously, it’s great for them to be winning games because it gives the young boys confidence to finally go and provide competition for places.
