Everton Youth Teams Thread

...I thought last nights win was more about spirit and organisation than individual quality. Indeed I was a bit disappointed in a couple of performances.

Liam Walsh continues to be stand out to me. The sublime ball into Duffus for the first goal was the moment of the match. Dowell has so much quality but isn't involved enough, I thought it was his glorious floated pass into Walsh that led to the first goal but his contribution is few and far between.

The lads up front put in a shift and took goals well but you have to be very special to break into the Premiership as a forward.

I was disappointed with Kenny and Foulds at full back. Both gave rash and unnecessary penalties away in such a key game. I like Kenny but that was as poor as I've seen him, even when he got forward his crosses were wayward.

As I posted on the Donkor thread, I think it was an encouraging debut considering the lad only arrived in a strange country days ago. He's certainly some athlete and he certainly has a good attitude. I think the coaches will be encouraged that they have something to build on.

A fine win. Good to see Koeman there. I wondered if Unsworth might be busy working on bringing new players in.

That was probably the best I've seen Duffus play (which hasn't been that often). I could see both Duffus and Dyson being standard level lower league strikers and making a decent living from the game.

Kenny, that was another chance to impress the powers that be. Don't know if it was nerves with him. Foulds, I think, people expect to be part of the Stones, Galloway, Holgate 'import production line' but he is still only 18 and needs to do some filling out.

Is Joe Williams still injured?

..I agree about Dufus, it's the best I've seen him and he was up against a £30m CB. I presume Williams is injured which is a real shame, great attitude to his footy.

I see Matty Foulds was mentioned in another thread, remember he was bought in the Jan transfer thread last year, any idea how he is getting on, as if I remember rightly he was a real good prospect ?

..I thought he had a poor game, the opposing full back ran him tagged in the 2nd half and he threw a real rash tackle that led to the first penalty. As somebody said, he's a bit younger so has time on his side but I have to be honest and say he wasn't overly impressive after a reasonably bright start.

Honestly think foulds is a centre half, not a full back. Seen him play a few times since he signed and he definitely looks like a central defender to me. He's very good in the air and reads the game pretty well. He's not particularly quick either which is an issue for most aspiring full backs. Think he will end up playing centrally as his career progresses

Yes he looks too lanky to play full back for me

I'm a big Pennington fan and last night, barring the foul for the pen, further enhanced my opinion of him. He's not massive but is dominant in the air, reads the game well, has tidy feet and most importantly is positionally spot on.

These days defenders go into midfield chasing and pressing, but such moronic movements break the defensive unit and leave space in behind to be exploited; Pennington's default initial movements are to retreat into the box and defend outwards, something beyond too many highly rated and very expensive kids these days.

Hyperbolic maybe, but I see a lot of the John Terry/Carragher pure defender in him, and feel he could develop into one of the very best in the league given a few years Premier League experience.
