...decision time for Courtney Dufus contract;

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-tell-young-striker-show-12570677

He looked really decent against Man Utd, the best I've seen him. High flying Brighton were sniffing around last month so he shouldn't struggle for a decent club regardless.
Interesting that they refused an offer from a club at a decent level. They must see a lot more potential in him than he has shown in his matches so far. He surprised me with how well he played against United as well.

...and of course Dufus might fancy leaving himself. A club like Brighton is not to be scoffed at and I dare say he'll be on a long contract and higher salary. Unless there's a contract offer on the table I suspect we won't get a fee.

Always disappointing if a kid doesn't quite make it but the fact that the majority of these kids are finding decent clubs is testament to the academy in itself. We're at the level were only the best young players will improve our first team. We've been fortunate that Davies has followed Barkley so quickly, hopefully it's the start of a golden generation but the likes of City United (Rashford aside) Liverpool Spurs are struggling to bring through anyone who can make an impact in their first team.

..I think Barkley made his debut in 2011, Davies more recently so one coming through every 5 years or so. The academy successes are increasingly talented youngsters we've brought in to the club (Galloway; Holgate; Calvert-Lewin) so it's not a surprise we are looking to exploit that market.

You have to say though that nobody disagrees with him being miles away from the first team, overall he's been disappointing this season, all be it the last 5 or six games he's shown some of his form from last season. The frustrating thing is , as @Eggs says, he has a touch of quality that can turn a game which few others in his age group possess. In contrast, Harry Charsley rarely gets mentioned here, yet for overall contribution to the U23s in terms of games played, positions played , goals scored etc he would probably be the player of the season. He's an excellent player , scores good goals...... yet seems to lack that certain magic which Dowell possesses Charsley seems to fall into the Conor Grant/ Connor McAleny category, well coached, good skills , works hard but a level blow making it for our first team.
If Dowell could pick up some of Charsley's attributes it would help him a lot. It's perhaps not surprising he didn't go out on loan, you couldn't really see him helping a team in a relegation dog fight in League2 as Walsh did, though it may well have done him good. Still young yet though , this is what our U23s is all about, analysing his performance with him , making adjustments to his game and turning him into a better player.

To be fair though, looking on the OS, Dowell has scored 7 goals in 16 games, which is a decent return for a midfielder, although I'm not sure how accurate it is, as it has Charsley as having scored 12 from 13.

Haha, this feels like Deja Vu mate, I'm sure we've had this conversation about how crap the OS is with their stats regarding another player. To be honest I don't have upto date stats, but from the last I've seen and trying to remember who scored re cently id say Dowell is on about 2 or3 , Charsley with about7 or 8 . That includes PL2 and the various cup- thingys .

I think they had Pele Niasse on about 2 goals per game  You'd think it would be easy enough to get the right stats. They don't play that often.

Ultimately it's because they don't need/want to

If you can afford to throw 90 million around for Paul Pogba, you're not going to care as much about developing your own youth players. You might have one or two, just for marketing reasons, but that's all at the end of the day

Chelsea have some of the best youth facilities in the world, but they just stockpile good young players to keep other clubs from having them. Most of the vast number of kids that they have on loan were signed with no intention of ever promoting them to the senior set up. They were signed to keep them away from other clubs

At Everton there is more of a culture of bringing kids through, and though there are definitely pockets of the fan base who are against the idea of promoting within, there seems to be a genuine acceptance amongst the rest that promoting younger players is a good idea, especially if they are local lads who love the club

Ultimately the law of averages alone suggests that all the "big" clubs have enough talented young kids in their academies to make an impact. They just don't let them

I agree with your comments and the points you make, but the other side of Chelsea is that their own home grown products are now starting to come through. They have some of the best English born youngsters in their age groups like Loftus-Cheek, Tammy Abrahams, Dominic Solanke, the two Chalobah brothers . Their problem is not only have they got bought in youngsters to compete against but international class seniors bought in. Abrahams will probably be sold for about £15 mill ish, and you can see the others going for good fees too. The 17 year old Trevoh Chalobah is worth a punt on if he ever becomes available, I watched him playing alongside Morgan Feeney for England and he's a beast of a centre back for his age. I think that's the way to play them , look for the disgruntled ones about to become out of contract and try to snap them up.

Its a difficult one for players to come through at premier league clubs. You need a lot of luck, injuries in your position for example, the margins for error are so slight these days that it can be a massive risk for managers to take a chance on youth. It's all well and good supporters caliming they want "one of their own" in the first team but in this day and age of social media and 24 hour a day sports news the hounding of a poor performance by a player can be relentless.

The step up to open age football is massive and thats why I think a lot of the major recent successes like Stones and Ali are players who've come from lower down the football pyramid who have got a number of games under their belt.

Wahoo, at last something we've all been asking for for ages an U23s game on Everton tv , v Southampton 20th February

i know its for charity but for £3.99 you'd expect at least the rest of the u23 home games to be honest.
i think utd and liverpool charge 7 quid a month for their tv channels.
