Everton Youth Teams Thread

...I wonder if he'll be part of the Euro Championship U21 squad in the summer.
You would hope so Eggs as it would be good experience for the lad. The one thing that may go against him is that they have a settled squad and the FA tend to like continuity.

But if you look at the players he is up against, in central midfield, the only one getting regular premier games is Ward Prowse. The others are Loftus-Cheek & Chalobah (Chelsea), Grealish (Villa), Hughes (Derby), Swift (Reading) and Winks (Spurs). Chalobah gives you that protection in front of the back 4 and RLC can provide that bit of magic that wins games. But Davies has to be ahead of the rest you would think.

hes already better than anyone you mentioned, better than any central midfielder in the full squad too to be honest which is why i think he'll skip out the u20's and u21s.

Wouldn't argue with you about him being better than the CMs in the full squad mate. But there's no competition this year at full level. The under 21s have the euros and I think that would be a good experience for him.

Winks is getting some game time (2 starts) while Hughes and Swift re getting regular game time albeit at a lower level. Hard to hold it against them being involved but you'd imagine a lad playing regularly for a top 6/7 side and impressing should be ahead of them.

My real frustration us lads like Chalobah and RLC who are not starting a lot, and yet on reputation alone are in ahead of Davies currently.

Think this could be the FA's motto for the national team at all age levels.

Yes absolutely. You have a lad like Aidy Boothroyd picking lads like RLC and Chabolah because they play for Chelsea. No wonder people think it's unfair and unethical.

I have nothing against those two. If they were playing regularly and doing well fair enough.

Not sure if you saw Eggs original post mate but it was asking if Davies would get selected for the U21 euros. I think he should be ahead of those mentioned. However Chalobah is the only player in the current squad who is there to protect the back 4 which is why I singled him out. RLC also plays further forward than Davies and offers something different in a balanced squad. The other players I mentioned all play the same type of game as Tom.

Got to say mate that that's a harsh assessment that I disagree with. Both Chalobah and RLC are talented players who have proved themselves with England youth over the years, so they are not in just in on reputation , at u 21 level they've earned their place . The fact that Davies is not there and that they can't get regular game time at currently the best PL team doesn't reflect on their right to be in the u21 squad.

The positives are really from us in playing the likes of Davies, Holgate and DCL. And DCL is a similar argument in that we've given him his chance and he's taken it, yet last August as a relative unknown he would have been seen as way behind the likes of his England age peers like Armstrong, Solanke, Brown, Abraham, Baker , Roberts etc. so it will be interesting to see how many starts he gets in the next week .

That's a fair point mate. However with such an approach do we end up getting "team England's" at every level that isn't flexible enough to reflect the relatively quick and substantial development that can come from other young players? How are newer lads meant to get a look in if the tried and tested lads are picked irrespective of club form? It just doesn't sit right with me.

And clearly isn't working in tournament football. No player should feel like they're entitled to a position no matter what they've done in the past.

constructive response. My point being that talent isn't enough, there are 100s if not 1000s of kids who are extremely talented who won't make the breakthrough. Application and luck play a huge part. My point regarding the free kick is that like any passage of play what you do in response to losing possession is vital.
I know what your point was but the example you gave was completely stretching it. He took the free kick then stepped to the right to see if it went in. The ball hit the post and went out to the left hand corner post, Dowell then turned round so he was facing that way. That's the way I saw it. I thought your example was nitpicking in the extreme.

He has something that perhaps 1% of players have 99% of players can track runners and be tactically astute they are learnt traits yet you complain. He isn't a water carrier & the brief cameos i have seen in the first team he worked his Socks off.

If he doesn't make it then Everton themSelves will have to take a large responsibility as I'd bet if he played in Spain he would make it.
Completely agree with this, we don't seem to concentrate on what players like Dowell can actually do.
