FA Cup 24/25 - Punjab United to Wembley

So after their defeat of Corinthian it’s Ashford United , nicknamed “ the Nuts and Bolts” , that is now being followed into the next round :

Ashford United F.C. are an English football club based in Ashford, Kent. The 'new' United was formed in 2011, resurrecting the name used by the town's football club between 1891 and 1907. Following the demise of the original Ashford United club in 1907 and through to 1928 Ashford was represented by Ashford Railway Works FC and after that between 1930 and 2010 by Ashford Town F.C. The current club is effectively a 'phoenix club' having risen from the ashes of the financial ruin of its predecessor. Although not a supporter owned club, like most non-league clubs, it relies on contributions of volunteers and supporters.

Ashford United are currently members of the Isthmian League South East Division following their record-breaking promotion from the Southern Counties East Football League in the 2016–17 season. They are one of very few semi-professional teams in England to have a synthetic 3G pitch, which is located at their home stadium 'The Homelands'.

And tomorrow it’s the FA Cup third qualifying round. Ashford United have been drawn away to Chertsey Town . U

26 Chertsey Town v Ashford United, the magic of the FA Cup continues and many would say is enhanced by the fact that we’re not in it yet so we have no real worries or concerns 🙂

Ooops , a bit behind here. Anyway , in a thrilling game Chertsey Town beat Ashford United 3-2.

This took them into the Fourth Qualifying Round against Sutton United where , despite leading 1-0 after 4 minutes they eventually lost 3-1 , so Sutton United are now being followed into the First Round proper.

Back in1970 Sutton Utd reached the 4th round where they drew Leeds Utd, who were the reigning League Champions.
Leeds won 6-0.
Sutton have had strong runs in their long history and climbed to the summit of semi-professional and amateur football in England, but they’ve never managed to break into the Football League. They’ve gotten close, once or twice, but they haven’t yet gotten over the hump. Sutton’s run in the 1969-70 FA Cup was one of the highlights of their lengthy history, fighting their way into the Third Round and then overcoming Hillingdon Borough in a replay to move on to the Fourth. While few had any illusions about their ultimate chances— no one was booking trips to London for the Final— there was some hope that maybe they could get just a little bit further.

It’s hard to imagine those hopes held firm for most people when the Fourth Round draw, held before their replay with Hillingdon, paired them with Leeds United. This was, of course, Don Revie’s Leeds. Champions of England and one of Europe’s strongest sides. They who figured so prominently in David Peace’s The Damned Utd. You get the idea.

Giant killing was one thing, but this… this was something else. Sutton were charged with the task of slaying a mountain. Of capturing the moon and displaying it in the trophy case. Of chasing the car AND knowing what to do with it once you caught it. A tall order, but to their credit, Sutton seemed up for it.

But there was to be no great Cupset that day at Gander Green Lane. While Sutton came close to getting on the scoresheet a few times— a strike on the crossbar here, a disallowed goal there— there was just no chance of overcoming Leeds that day. Allan Clarke tallied four goals that day, and, combined with a brace from Peter Lorimer, gave Leeds a dominant and altogether-expected win over Sutton. The result wasn’t surprising, and neither was the scoreline, but it’s hard not to feel sad for the home side. There was nothing more Sutton could’ve done to even force a draw and a replay; still, to imagine an alternate universe where the U’s held on and overcame Leeds is a lovely flight of fancy. And maybe that’s where the real magic of the Cup lives.

Draw for the First Round now been made and Sutton United have got the plum tie of the round , at home v Birmingham City .
Good stuff, I’m hoping to make a second round game . I promised my Southampton away ticket to a mate because I thought I’d be away on holiday but I’m away now so hopefully I can get to a game.

Well it’s odds on that this thread will be following Birmingham into the 2nd round, I watched their televised match v Wrexham and they were very good . They’ll walk League 1 and probably have a good cup run too as they’ve got a very expensively assembled team .

Got my dates wrong 🤦‍♂️ that’s the first round, I’ll have a think when the replays are done.

I went to Bradford City v Aldershot on Saturday, Aldershot started well faded a bit but still went in 1-0 ahead at halftime. Bradford got themselves organised in the second half and won 3-1, decent ground and 3 pubs in the city centre that did CAMRA discount.

And ,if you weren’t aware Saturdays score was Sutton United 0-1 Birmingham, so Birmingham march on into the 2nd round where they will be away to Blackpool in an all League 1 fixture. Again , Birmingham will be favourite to progress into the 3rd round.
Some highlights of the game :

Was this taken from some wiki page or something? Sutton was in League 2 in 2021 when I saw them play at Leyton Orient.

Yes you are right, it was written as a “ Reply” to a poster who brought up Sutton v Leeds in the ‘70s so it’s that time era . 2021/22 was their first season in League 2, but after 3 years were relegated back to the National League in May ‘24.
