Surely that's because top players have a fast track to the top roles, whether as coaches or managers? You only have to look at the number of ex players Everton has on the coaching staff. Is it because of their exceptional coaching ability or that they're an ex player so that gives them either increased visibility to those who hire or a halo effect that they "get" the club so therefore must be better.Being a top player doesn't mean that much, but most top managers were good players though. I'd say Wenger, Mourinho etc are exceptions more than the rule.
